UConn Sports Roundup, November 12, 2011

Stephane Diop led the Huskies
to victory vs. Louisville last
night.
Men's Soccer: We're on to the Big East Final! We defeated Louisville 1-0 yesterday thanks to a perfect strike from distance off the foot of Stephane Diop in the 81st minute. We will face St. John's in the final tomorrow at noon. That game is available nationally on CBS Sports Network and locally on SNY and other regional television.

Field Hockey: The Huskies defeated Princeton, 3-2 earlier today. They will face the winner of Penn State-Northeastern in the Quarterfinals tomorrow at 2:00. Anne Jeute scored two goals for the Huskies and Chloe Hunnable added a third.

UConn handled Columbia fairly easily last night, but
could have done better.
Men's Basketball: The Huskies opened up the season by beating Columbia, 70-57.  Jeremy Lamb led the way with 30 points. The Huskies will next face Wagner on Monday at 7:30. That game will be at Gampel Pavilion and air on SNY. A 13 point win over a .500 team from the Ivy League is decent, but we hardly blew them out of the water. Also, the championship banner was unveiled, but not before technical difficulties delayed the dropping of the tarp.

The Huskies and Crusaders last
faced off in last year's opener.
UConn won 117-37.
Women's Basketball: It's opening day for the Huskies tomorrow at 2:00 as they host the Holy Cross Crusaders. That game will be on CPTV live from Gampel. It should be an easy win.

Weekend Preview November 11th-13th, 2011

A big weekend coming up. Big East Soccer Championship, opening rounds for Field Hockey NCAA Tournament, and of course, BASKETBALL OPENING NIGHT!!!!!! Let's take a look.

Red Bull Arena will host the
Big East Tournament today
and Sunday.
Men's Soccer: The Big East Championship semifinal is tonight at 5:00 PM against Louisville. That game is live from Red Bull arena on CBS College Sports Network. The Huskies defeated Louisville 1-0 earlier this season. Of course, the winner will get the winner of St. John's-Villanova on Sunday at noon. That game is on CBSCS and BigEast.tv. We will also be heading to the NCAA Tournament next weekend, and will likely be hosting straight through to the quarterfinals if we can win this tournament. Even if we lose today or Sunday, we might. Also, seven Huskies won postseason conference awards. See here for more details.

Field Hockey: The Huskies will be hosting the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. At 11:30 AM on Saturday UConn will take on the Princeton Tigers. At 2:00 PM on the same day, Penn State faces Northeastern. The winners square off at 2:00  on Sunday. The winner of that game advances to the National Semifinal on November 18th in Louisville. Any UConn games during the semifinals or final will be on All-Access free.

Jeremy Lamb looks to lead
the Huskies.
Men's Basketball: Huskies open up the season tonight vs. Columbia. It should be a blowout. We're ranked #4 in the nation, and they are at the bottom of the Ivy League. Kemba may be gone, but this is still an excellent team. I just hope we have the team chemistry to win games. That's my biggest concern.

Women's Basketball: The women open on Sunday vs. Holy Cross. Another blowout. We beat them by 80 last year. We  may not have Maya Moore, but we're still a Top 5 program. And the fact that we're surprised to "only" be #5 should say something about how great our program is.

UConn Sports Roundup November 9th

The NCAA Tournaments are getting underway. Let's hope
the Huskies can do well.
Field Hockey: The Huskies will host a regional as the #3 overall seed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will host Princeton at 11:30 AM on Saturday, to be followed by Northeastern vs. Penn State. A webstream of both games will be available on All-Access for FREE! The winners meet on Sunday to go to the Final Four. This could be a great Tournament for the Huskies. Two home wins away from the Semifinals. And we beat Princeton and Penn State already. And Northeastern shouldn't be very hard to beat if they can upset the Nittany Lions. I like our chances. Go Huskies!
Caroline Doty looks to return
triumphantly.

Women's Basketball: Exhibition tonight vs. Pace at XL Center. Get ready for a blowout with nobody there. Regular season gets underway Sunday vs. Holy Cross
Let's beat Cards!

Men's Soccer:  We will face Louiville Friday at 5:00 PM in the Big East semifinal. That game will be on CBS College Sports. This should be exciting as well. Huskies are awesome. Why can't I be on campus this semester?

UConn Sports Roundup, November 7th

Big weekend just ended. Here we go...

The Huskies, led by Tony Cascio, got the win against Rutgers.
They will look to beat Louisville on Friday.
Men's Soccer: The Huskies advanced to the Big East semifinals by defeating Rutgers, 3-1. The Scarlet Knights led 1-0 at halftime, but UConn battled back to win 3-1. Things got a bit chippy at the end with perhaps some punches being thrown. No word yet on suspensions. In any case, the Huskies will advance to the Big East semifinals Friday at Red Bull Arena, where they will face Louisville at 5:00 PM. Winner gets the winner of Villanova-St. John's on Sunday at noon.

Field Hockey: The Huskies lost to Syacuse, 3-2 in the Big East Championship game. The selection show for the NCAA tournament is tomorrow at 8:00 PM on the NCAA's website. The Huskies went down 3-0 early, but almost managed another comeback. Oh well. Let's do better in the NCAA Tournament.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies lost 3-1 to West Virginia. This eliminates their slim postseason hopes. We do, still, have two road games at Rutgers and Seton Hall next weekend.

Men's Basketball: Former UConn player Kevin Freeman has joined the team as a coaching staff. More info here. Also, the Huskies beat C.W. Post, 91-61 in an exhibition. The real season starts Friday night vs. Columbia on ESPNU at 7:00 PM.

UConn Huskies Sports Roundup, November 6th

I'm going to keep it short today since I'm busy. But I'll be back tomorrow.

Men's Soccer: Quarterfinal today at 1:00 PM at Rutgers. You can watch it here. Winner faces winner of Louisville and Marquette Friday at 5:00.

Field Hockey: The Huskies will go for the Big East title today at 1:00. That can be seen here.

Women's Volleyball: Faces Pttsburgh today at 2:00 PM.

UConn Sports Roundup, November 4th, 2011 (UPDATED 2:03 PM)

J.S. Coyne Field in Syracuse is the setting for this
weekend's Big East Field Hockey Tournament.
Men's Soccer: The Huskies dominated DePaul in the Big East first round, 4-0. UConn outshot the Blue Demons 26-4 and Carlos Alvarez added two goals, including one on a penalty kick. And frankly, this could have been even more of a blowout. Let's hope the Huskies can keep it up when they head into Rutgers on Sunday at 1 for the quartefinals.

Women's Basketball: Tiffany Hayes and Stephanie Dolson each had a double-double as the Huskies defeated Assumption 89-30 in an exhibition match. This should come as no surprise given that Assumption is Division II. But let's hope we can do well in the real season. Next up, we host Pace in an exhibition on Wednesday, before opening the Season vs. Holy Cross on Sunday, November 13th.

The Huskies will look to
beat Rutgers on Sunday in the Big
East soccer tournament. .
Field Hockey: The Big East Tournament gets underway today at 12:30 as the Huskies take on the Louisville Cardinals at J.S. Coyne Field in Syracuse. After that, the Orange will host Villanova. The two winners will square off at 1:00 PM on Sunday. The Orange will look to take home field advantage, while the Huskies want revenge from last year's beating at home on the hands of Syracuse. All games can be seen on Bigeast.tv

Women's Ice Hockey: The Huskies play a home-and-home with Northeastern starting tonight. The leg in Boston will be today at 7:00 PM,  while the red and black Huskies come to Freitas tomorrow at 4:00. The home game can be seen on Huskies All-Access.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Huskies are in Erie, Pa this weekend as they face Mercyhurst tonight and Saturday. Both games are at 7:05.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies will host their final two home games of the season as they face West Virginia (tonight, 7:00 PM) and Pittsburgh (Sunday, 2:00 PM). The Huskies are 3-7 in Big East play, while West Virginia and Pitt are 4-7. Also, the Huskies have won two straight.

Football: The Huskies host the Orange tomorrow at noon on ESPNU. If they want any shot of making a bowl game, the Huskies need to win. A 3-6 start plus games vs. Rutgers and at Cincinnati, and we're done. But we're two point favorites. Let's hope we can win.

UPDATE 2:03 PM: The Huskies trailed 2-0 to Louisville early, but came back to win 3-2. Next up is Cuse or Nova. Summary to follow.

UConn Sports Roundup, November 3rd, 2011

Here's to great years for both of our hoops teams!
Men's Basketball: Good showing in the exhibition last night as the Huskies beat  American International by a convincing score of 78-35. Jeremy Lamb had 17 points and Shabazz Napier had 15. Ryan Boatright did not play due to eligibility issues. Let's look forward to the actual season, but first the second exhibition, Sunday vs. CW Post at XL Center. The first real game is Friday, November 11th vs. Columbia at 7:00 PM.

Women's Basketball: The women host Assumption in an exhibition at 7:30 PM at Gampel. Coverage is on UConnHuskies.com and WTIC.

Men's Soccer: The first round of the Big East Tournament will be tonight at 6:00 PM at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies will host DePaul. With a win, we will face off on Sunday afternoon at Rutgers at 1:00 PM. Currently, the Huskies are #4 in the RPI computer rankings but only 7th in the Coaches' Poll. Top four teams in the NCAA Tournament are assured of home games through the quarterfinals and then the neutral-site College Cup. If we can win the Big East Tournament, we have a good chance of being one of them.

Field Hockey: And of course, the Field Hockey Big East Tournament is this weekend. Tomorrow at 12:30, the Huskies face the Louisville Cardinals at 12:30 PM. Then, the host team Syracuse will play Villanova at 3:00 PM. The winners face off on Sunday at 1:00 and all games are free live online at Bigeast.tv.

November 1st UConn Huskies Sports Roundup

Internet is finally back here! And we've got a very busy sports week coming up...

These DePaul fans are happy. Let's
hope it's not because they're going to
beat us.
Men's Soccer: The men will take on DePaul in the opening round of the Big East Tournament on Thursday at a time TBA. With a win, the Huskies would move to the quarterfinals and face Rutgers on the road on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The Thursday game will be on WHUS. We just have to hope not to lose on Penalty Kicks again. Or at all. Let's not have another late season collapse, ok? Plain ridiculous how this happens every year. It shouldn't.

Football: It's Syracuse gameweek, as the Huskies will host the Orange on Saturday at noon on ESPNU. Weather is to be sunny with a high of 49 degrees. Better than October snow. The Huskies are 3-5 and desparately need a win in order to go to a bowl. Syracuse is 5-3 overall and 1-2 in Big East games.

Do these oranges intimidate you? No.
Nor should they. We can b
eat the Orange.
Field Hockey: The #4 ranked Huskies will play Louisville in a Big East Tournament semifinal on Friday afternoon at 12:30. You can see that game on BigEast.tv. The winner will face the winner of Syracuse-Villanova, which will be played at 3:00. The championship will be Sunday at 1:00. All games can be seen on Bigeast.tv. Also, the Huskies are ranked #4 in the RPI. Hopefully, this means we can get a national seed in the Tournament and host a regional. That would give us a huge boost towards the Final Four. But let's focus on this tournament first. Syracuse essentially has home field advantage, but we had it last year and the Orange beat us in the final. Let's get revenge.

Finally time for Hoops! Yay!
Men's Basketball: The exhibition opener vs. American International is tomorrow night at 7:30 PM on Huskies All-Access and WTIC-1080. The Huskies obliterated the Yellow Jackets last year and should do so this year too. But it's nice to see players in game action for the first time. Plus we get to see the walk-ons for the only time. And Jim Calhoun gets to laugh at his alma mattter when he beats them.

Women's Basketball: Not to be outdone, the women will host Assumption on Thursday night, also at 7:30 PM. Can we "bounce back" from our "poor" Final Four season and win another championship? Well it starts in two days...

Men's Ice Hockey: Not much to report since the Army game on Sunday was postponed. It will be on February 7th at 7:05 PM. That's a Tuesday and the only other Husky contest is when the women's hoops team heads to Louisville. The Huskies will travel to Mercyhurst this Friday and Saturday night. Both games start at 7:05 PM. Let's hope the long layover between games doesn't hurt our hot streak.

Women's Ice Hockey: The Huskies look for their second win of the season as they face Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at 4:00. That game will be on Huskies All-Access.
