1:26 PM: 1-2-3 inning. No hits for either team so far, just the Mazilli walk.
1:20 PM: Bulls' base coaches waring dark helmets unlike their batters. Hats are gray. Nice. Scoreless middle 2nd.
1:16 PM: USF in green and UConn in blue. It's a tad confusing. 0-0 after 1. LJ Mazilli picked off first to end the inning.
1:06 Pm: Bulls wearing white batting helmets. Don't see that a lot but I like it.
12:57 PM: USF fan "if anyone needs an extra Coat, I have some in my car." And I'm in short sleeves. It's nice out by Storrs standards. Deal with it, Florida folk.
12:50: The Gilbert Hs Yellow Jacket baseball team is here.
12:45 PM: the new husky logo is above the scoreboard now. 15 minutes until first pitch.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Gregory Kochhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09329228700718085786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1765686031863105108.post-20585043831537812962013-04-18T12:36:00.001-04:002013-04-18T13:49:21.260-04:00Photos from the uniform unveilingPhotos from the press conference with the unveiling of the uniforms will be here.

1:35: we are starting. No chat now.
1:30 PM: They're playing "Thrift Shop." Let's hope it's not a harbinger for the quality of these uniforms.
1:29 PM: Jonathan costume guy is here. It's still the old design. I will miss the cute doggie after this year.
1:26 PM: Stephanie Dolson arrives with a boot on her leg and a gray t-shirt.
1:12 PM: and the band is in on the ugly dark gray too. Et tu, Brute? This falls Storrs. Pray away the gray.
1:09 PM: lots of athletes wearing gray with husky logo. Doesn't bode well for those who think that platinum Nike dark gray ugly has no place on a uniform.
1:02: Yeah, it's ice hockey. One of the players is number 48 and that's the only women's team with a number 48. So those are just practice shorts. The player talking about the red and gray gestured to her sleeves when she said it.
12:57: ok, maybe that wasn't field hockey because they said their uniforms were similar to the men "but with the gray and red different." Could be ice hockey, in which case those are just practice shorts. But it means there will be red and gray. Ugh.
12:55 PM: a few field hockey girls just walked in wearing what appears to be the team's new shorts, but I don't know if they're home, away, or both. I got a photo but looked like a total creep doing so.
12:47 PM: they're testing the intro. Either that or they're going to spend the next 40 minutes explaining why they need to change this. Ok, it just finished and now they're running it again from the beginning. It's a test. "This is the moment we pay tribute to the toughness and tradition of past champions." How about retaining their identity to honor them???
12:39 PM: less than an hour to go. Tour groups still coming through gampel. Makes me remember when I was in high school. Also, the band is here. Who brings a band to a uniform unveiling?

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXy8tYeOGQD6r4vnmf55mXIxDCayi3PnGMEFLK_p-DB4ydhPSZdFiMxkfsG5umpLGY3tfN3Ul6X9XdFa_zIHL2WziHc8oPreb72OhnXwbD_zwbJnkJbepLZCmgVueDBwsxyLHcZTtJT0p9/s640/blogger-image--1860957970.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
7:57 pm: halftime. 0-0 even though we're outshooting them 12-2. Also, the kids playing on the field at halftime are wearing pink socks for breast cancer awareness.

6:57 pm: updates will be less frequent So I can watch the game.

6:55: pregame introductions starting. 5 minutes until game time. Also, the kids on the field with the huskies are wearing pink socks. Our players are not.

6:05 pm: about 55 minutes until game time. My seat is just to the ice rink side of midfield on the press box side. Top row, right under the press box. That wy I can lean back on the press box wall and also see over the things they put over the benches. (See picture)

6:12 pm: pregame music simultaneously playing lion king and freestyle rap over the PA system. Is this really a single song or are they playing two separately?

6:16 pm: UConn will wear pink wristbands tonight for breast cancer. Some players are wearing other pink stuff in warmups

6:31 pm: Just under half an hour until the game starts. Usf wearing weird warmups that are green with a bull logo on the front and grey on the back.

6:36 pm: only a couple dozen fans here so far, including about 8 in the far bleachers. One man in a USF jacket made the trip up, as did a woman with him who I presume is his wife.

6:42 pm: submitted Samantha McGuire for goal of the game contest. Also entered the student giveaway for VIP seats to first night. There aren't many other students here so I like my odds.

6:54 pm: all new news will be at the top of this post. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2vcBiJu7p3uoa3JfWrMJ6to_XhrB-wIWR9IJtzw6vQHhnYnKgOYFFH6CVYwhopWwmR2bAKAu2j2qLRzDkAB4te-HaJxphw2TOdUHXH3rF8CMO_e99FeyoBWC7TkkSdl9bmHBx5xfgY11i/s640/blogger-image--1603946331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;

UConn and Fairfield face
eachother. Yes, they are going
white-on-white. Confusing

Doubleheaders are always fun, but what about double doubleheaders? That must be twice the fun, right? Right. I got to Gampel around 9:30 AM to watch the first matchup of the day, and third of the tournament (I missed Day 1 because I was at men's soccer). Michigan State beat Dartmouth 3 games to none. It was an interesting matchup, but not particularly close. Michigan State won, as they were expected to do.

Then came the first main match, involving the Huskies, as they took on the Fairfield Stags. You can see in the photo on the left that the two teams went white-on-white, which was very confusing.

We won the first set rather easily. The last two took some trouble, but we won them too. I must say the marketing people have done a great job at attracting students and other fans since I was last there two years ago. There was a good total - officially 156 for the first game, but I thought we had more. For the second game, we nearly doubled that with 312 fans.

But the second part of the day didn't start until 5:00 and the first game let out around 2:00. I walked across the street to the Student Union for lunch, then watched some football in the lounge. I saw Ohio upset Penn State, in an upset I had predicted earlier. I also saw Bowling Green get out to an early lead against Florida, but evidently they were unable to hold on.

Speaking of the second game, it was against Big Ten power Michigan State. Although we won our first two matches of the tournament, the Spartans proved too much for us to handle. They won in straight sets. It was still exciting to see such a prominent team come to our place.

A full day of volleyball, and a fun one at that. Even if we didn't win the second game and take the tournament crown, it was still a great day.

I was worried heading into this contest that this would be a "trap" game for the Huskies as we looked ahead to the nationally televised matchup vs. Washington on Friday. After all, that almost happened vs. Yale and Boston University last year. And alas, it almost happened again here.

We were up 1-0 late, but gave up a goal with 6 seconds left to tie it at 1. Thankfully, Mamadou scored a goal in overtime for a 2-1 victory. It was a scare, but we won.

A win is a win, after all. But if we play like this against Washington, we're going to lose. I'll take this result, but we need to pick up our play now that our schedule is getting tough.

Above, see a picture of Dartmouth warming up. If you look closely, you'll see the scoreboard gives their name as "Green".

This was the first regular season game of the year for men's soccer, so it was also the first Goal Patrol meeting. It was crowded, probably more crowded than it will be at any game the rest of the season. We probably had several hundred students, at least, at the Goal Patrol meeting.

St. Francis warmups - why
the red?

When we arrived, St. Francis was warming up. They were wearing red uniforms. (See picture on left) This confused me because I distinctly recalled St. Francis wearing blue when we played them before. Several thoughts occurred to me - was I wrong? Had they changed their uniforms? Were we playing the other St. Francis? But it turns out, those were just their warm ups. Strange. They changed into blue uniforms for the actual game, per their school colors. But the red warmups looked like real uniforms. They had numbers only on the front, while the real uniforms had numbers only on the back, but they could easily have been interchanged. Is one the alternate away uniform or something, and they use it as warmups when they're not wearing it? I don't know. Anyway, you can view a photo of the blue game uniforms on this page as well.

St. Francis huddling in blue uniforms
before the game.

Then the game started. We scored our only goal on a Mamadou Doudou Diouf penalty kick, but frankly it could have been a lot more of a blowout. We had almost 20 shots, and about a dozen chances that could easily have led to goals. But we only scored one. But a win is a win. We are ranked #1 in one poll now and #4 in the other. With #2 UCLA losing to St. Francis, we could be ranked #3 next week in that poll. Next up for men's soccer is Dartmouth next Friday. There are a women's soccer game and a field hockey game tomorrow at 1:00 PM. I may go to one, and I probably will. But there's other events going on then that aren't sports that I may attend instead. I don't know yet. I'll update tomorrow.

Regardless, I will be at the men's soccer vs. Dartmouth Friday night. But I can't attend football vs. UMass Thursday night, which is disappointing. I get out of class at 6:15, but that doesn't leave me time to catch the bus, the last one leaves at 6:00. Finally, a regular season game! After Friday night's game was interrupted and not counted, this one finally counts. Home opener - take two!

As it was, we outshot the Catamouths 25-3, but somehow allowed 2 of those 3 shots to go in. The third almost went in. It's troubling, because if teams manage to shoot against us, we'll be in trouble.

Nevertheless, we won. We went down 1-0 early, and it looks like the UCLA near-win was false hope. But we went up 2-1, and we were finally ahead. Vermont evened it 2-2, which had some of the fans groaning. But less than 30 seconds later, we took the lead back! We showed quick strike ability, scoring again right after that.
On the way out, they gave out miniature husky things. They're kind of cute. I'm not surprised they waited until the end. Keep the fans in their seats, even when the game became a blowout. You can see a photo on the right.

Unfortunately, two of our players left with injuries. The refs let Vermont get away with almost anything. We got called for a lot of fouls however. Bad refeereing. Maybe he was from Vermont?

Well, I finally saw a regular season UConn game this year. The next game will be Friday night, with the women's soccer again playing, this time against Boston College. On Saturday, I'll be at two games, field hockey against Bucknell and men's soccer OPENER vs. St. Francis. Exhibitions are usually nothing special. But this game was unique. First of all, we were wearing our blue road uniforms while Stony Book was wearing their red uniforms. We did that last year against the Seawolves too. And we wore our blue uniforms vs. UMass in the first exhibition. Not sure if it means anything for the regular season.

Andre in his plain
white T-shirt.

As for the game itself, there was no scoring. 0-0 draw, although we had A LOT of chances. We need to beat teams like Stony Brook, but it was an exhibition, so I guess it's ok.

The interesting part was when Andre Blake got a controversial yellow card that he probably didn't deserve. Speaking of Blake, he was wearing a plain white t-shirt to signify he was the goalkeeper. No number or team name. We in the Goal Patrol were discussing why he was wearing that. Did he lose his goalie shirts and simply grab the first thing in his drawer? I don't know.

There were only a few students in the Goal Patrol but we were joined by a few little kids late in the game. They joined us in calling the goalie names like "weenie with hot sauce". Actually, only they did that. But it's a kind of cool name. We should remember it for the future. The first regular season game is this Saturday vs. St. Francis. I will finally attend my first regular season game in ANY sport today at 1:00 PM as the women's soccer team takes on Vermont. I attended the UCLA women's soccer game, but it didn't count.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. We had a 3-2 lead over #6 UCLA with 32 minutes left. Then lightning came and they delayed the game. And then they canceled the game as the lightning continued. 12 more minutes and it would have been official. Unfortunately, it doesn't count so it is declared "NO CONTEST".

Therefore, I am not counting it as a game in my games log, although it will be duly noted that I attended.Gregory Kochhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09329228700718085786noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1765686031863105108.post-51904506211377134282012-08-16T14:18:00.000-04:002012-08-16T14:18:33.396-04:00Game 3-3-102: Women's Field Hockey exhibition vs. QuinnipaicWhat: Field Hockey exhibition vs. Quinnipiac
From 10:00-11:35, I was in philosophy class for the last time before the final. Fortunately, my class was in the Classroom Building, a two minute walk from the Sherman Family Sports Complex. I stopped by the Student Union to have a quick lunch, then walked across the street to Sherman.

Field hockey exhibitions are a bit different from regular season games. They have three periods of 25 minutes, instead of two halves of 35 minutes. Also, the scoreboard reset the score after each period. We lost the first period 1-0, won the second period by the same score, and won the third period 5-0. The total above reflects the combined score.

There was a family sitting behind me, and their daughter was on the team, I guess. They were cheering really loudly when she scored a goal. Unfortunately, I don't know who "she" is, because there were no roster sheets and no P.A. system. However, the player was laughing about it, and about how vocal her family was. Reminds me of my family. :-)

Melissa Gonzalez (left, in white)
and an unknown fan (in blue).

Surprisingly, as I said, we were down 1-0 after the first period to a far lesser team in the Bobcats. But we evened the score in the second on a penalty stroke, and scored five goals in the third to win 6-1. One of those goals came on a penalty stroke. Strange to have two penalty strokes in the same game.

Early in the first period, UConn alumnus Melissa Gonzalez came into the stands, fresh off her Olympic performance. She was wearing her Team USA Warmup jersey. It's hard to tell in the photo, but there was a really big Nike Swoosh on there on the right side, as well as some bizarre lime green piping in the collar area. Seemed kind of weird. Lime green is not a national color, why is it on our USA warmups?

In any case, Gonzalez got a warm welcome from the fans, most of whom recalled her time as a player. In an otherwise ordinary exhibition, Gonzalez added some excitement to the fans in the seats. Even though USA finished last among 12 teams, it's still impressive that she made the team, went to London, and competed.
UConn came out wearing their gray warm-up uniforms for the whole game. At first I thought they were just wearing them for practice, but they wore them the whole game. And LIU's uniforms had no numbers. Strange.

UConn got off to a 1-0 lead just before the half, thanks to a Linda Ruutu goal off a free kick. We went up 2-0 later, when we scored a goal in the second half. In the end, it was 2-1.

Not very exciting in general, but for an exhibition game it was. The real action starts next weekend, but this was just to get us (and the players) warmed up.

What kind of a name is Blackbirds, by the way? Hardly intimidating, unless it's 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.
Friday, December 21: vs. Fordham - source says "the Rams will head up to Storrs, Conn." but as it's over Winter Break, I think it's referring to the fact that UConn is in Storrs, and not saying the game is in Storrs. Actually other source says it's in Storrs. Would be strange to put it in Gampel over break, but maybe they are.
And an Upcoming Schedule Too!
Well, there are about 10 days left until the first UConn athletic event, so here's the blog again! I was a bit delinquent in posting summaries towards the end of last year, but I assure you that will change this year! It should be an exciting year. Most of our men's soccer team is back, so this could be a good year for them. Field hockey is always powerful too. Women's soccer will look to rebound. Volleyball is up and coming, I think. And thus begins my 3rd year at UConn.

I am on campus taking summer courses, so I will be attending the first two weeks of games. Here is a tentative schedule from August 10 until August 26 (the Sunday before classes start).
