UConn Huskies Player an Team of the Week for October 17-23

Here we go again...

Player of the Week: Nicole Paniccia, GK, Women's Ice Hockey:

Nicole Paniccia is our UConn Player of the Week.

Alexandra Garcia struggled in goal on Friday night against Maine, so Heather Linstad pulled her and brought in Paniccia, the young sophomore  Paniccia played 44 minutes and made 21 saves while allowing only a single goal. On Saturday, she was back in the lineup against the Black Bears, and recorded a shutout as the Huskies notched their first win of the year, 3-0. She was also named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts.

Honorable Mentions (in order)

1. Marie Elena Bolles, W, Field Hockey: Bolles notched the game winner against Syracuse in a 3-2, double OT win. The Huskies clinched at least a share of the Big East title and will have the #1 seed in the conference tournament.
2. Anne Jeute, F, Fiel Hockey: Jeute was named Offensive Player of the Week in the Big East thanks to scoring two goals and an assist this past week. Jeute scored a goal against BU on Wednesday night and added one against Syracuse on Sunday. She then assisted on Bolles' game winner vs. the Orange to help them win.
3. Mattison Quayle, OH, Women's Volleyball: Quayle recorded her third straight double-double on Friday and had 15 kills on Sunday.

Team of the Week:

As mentioned above, the Huskies went 2-0 and clinched a share of the Big East regular season title. They will face Rutgers and Princeton away next weekend before heading up to Syracuse for the Big East Championship. Then, it's on to the NCAA's and hopefully host a regional.

UConn Player and Team of the Week

As I started last week, it's time for this week's UConn Player and Team of the Week. Additionally, three honorable mention players are named, plus up to one honorable mention team. (None is included this week). Here we go. Additionally, I'm going to start a "points system" for players, with five points for winning POW, three for a HM1, two for an HM2, and one for HM3. Being on a Team of the Week will also earn the player one point, but I will not include those totals for players who have not won POW.

Player of the Week: Byron Jones, Defensive Back, Football
Jones had the critical play in the Huskies 16-10 Homecoming victory over South Florida. In the fourth quarter, with the Bulls winning 10-9, he recovered a USF fumble and ran it 10 yards to give the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish.

The Huskies' defense as a whole was also dynamic, forcing three additional turnovers en route to the win. For the second year in a row, we defeated South Florida without an offensive touchdown. It was this fantastic showing that earned Jones the Big East Defensive Player of the Week.

Honorable Mentions

1) Mattison Quayle, OH Women's Volleyball: Averaged 5.3 Kills per set over UConn's two victories, vs. Fordham and St. John's. Matched career highs in both games. She was named the Big East Player of the Week.
2) Anne Jeute, FW Field Hockey: Jeute scored two goals in a 3-1 victory over Princeton.
3) Lyle McCombs, RB, Football: McCombs totaled 130 yards on the ground in the 16-10 victory.

Team of the Week: Football

The Huskies got the win on Homecoming and defeated the USF Bulls, 16-10. The defense was great and managed to pull it out. The Huskies obtained their first Big East Victory of the year and are now 3-4. We started slow the last few years. Let's try to change it.

HM: Women's Volleyball for their two wins.
