UConn Huskies Sports Roundup for October 16th, 2011

Yesterday was a great day for Husky Sports. There is even more fun action today. Let's check it out.

Football: On Homecoming, the Huskies defeated USF 16-10 yesterday, in spite of not scoring an offensive touchdown. Dave Teggart kicked three field goals and Lyle McCombs rushed for 130 yards. We improve to 1-1 in Big East play and 3-4 overall. Next up is Pitt in a Wednesday night game on October 26th at 8:00 PM on ESPN. That will be our last road game before a three team, four week, homestand.

Men's Soccer: The Huskies improved to 13-0-1 on the season thanks to a 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh. Allando Matheson scored the game winner in the 61st minute for his third game-winning goal of the season. Next up, the Huskies begin a very challenging stretch of Big East games. First, on Tuesday at 7:00 PM, they will head to Morgantown to face West Virginia. The Mountaineers are tied for third place in the Big East Blue Division. Then, on October 22nd and 26t, the Huskies will host Georgetown and Marquette. The Hoyas are tied with WVU, four points back of the Huskies, and the Golden Eagles lead the Division at 5-0-0 in conference play but have struggled outside the division. All three games are on WHUS and the home games are also on All-Access.

Women's Ice Hockey: The Huskies fell to 0-4-2 on the year, losing 6-1 to Minnesota-Duluth. Sarah McDonnell scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the second period. The Bulldogs managed 48 shots on the contest.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies won their first first Big East game of the season, defeating St. John's 3-1. For the second straight game, Mattison Quayle had 20 kills, thus tying her career high. The Huskies are now 1-5 in Big East and 11-10 overall. Next up on Friday the 21st, the Huskies will travel to Villanova at 7:00 PM, followed by a Sunday matchup with Georgetown at 2:00 PM.

Women's Soccer: It's Senior Day today at Morrone Stadium as the Huskies host West Virginia at 1:00 PM. West Virginia is tied for first in the Big East American Division at 8-1-0. Should the Huskies pull off the upset win, they will clinch a spot in the Big East Women's Soccer Tournament. However, in order to avoid playing in the 4-5 opening round game, they will have to gain four points on Syracuse over the last two games. The Orange face #7 nationally Marquette today, and then travel to St. John's on Friday, October 21st. But keep in mind, if St. John's, Syracuse, and UConn, all finish with 18 points (due to UConn getting four points, and St. John's getting six while Syracuse gets none) St. John's will get the three seed, UConn the four, and Syracuse the five. The Red Storm host USF today.

Field Hockey: The #4 Huskies host Princeton today at 2:00 PM. No video, but Gametracker will be available. Next Sunday is a huge game to decide the Big East regular season champ, as the Huskies host Syracuse at 12:00 PM. All-Access will be available. The winner is guaranteed the Big East regular season title. However, this does not mean they will avoid #20 Louisville in the first round as we mentioned previously. The Cardinals were upset by Villanova, and could easily finish with the #4 seed now. There are a bunch of tiebreaker scenarios involving all five of those teams (besides UConn and Syracuse), which are too complicated for me to discuss.
