There will be away games at USF and Yale and home games vs. Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Rutgers. All other non-conference games are home. AAC Tournament is at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas for Semifinals and Finals. 8-9 matchup will be at location of #1 seed November 8, followed by Quarterfinals November 9 at higher seed. Like the women, the men will play home-and-home with teams in the AAC. According to this, we will also host UMass-Lowell, who is transitioning to D1. I would assume this is a regular-season game, but since we played them in an exhibition last year, this could be a previously-scheduled exhibition game.

Men's Ice Hockey:

According to tweets from Will Moran, the non-conference schedule will be (in no particular order) 

2 games At Minnesota State; At Boston University; vs. Union; At Providence; Vs. Sacred Heart (non-league); Vs. Quinnipiac or UMass (Holiday Tournament)

However, it is possible Sacred Heart is a conference game in the first round of the Holiday Tournament, as that usually happens. Actually, it was due to a scheduling error that they decided to keep. Sacred Heart will NOT count as a conference game. (see this tweet)

AAC Away Series at Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, and USF. USF will be the back end of spring break.

Game 2-13-81: Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

I'm keeping this post short because I'm busy with midterms. Starting with Gameday, I'll be able to say a lot more.


What: Men's Basketball vs. Marquette
Where: XL Center
When: Saturday, February 18, 12:00 PM
Result: Loss, 79-64

Really disappointing loss for the Huskies. I was sort of expecting it, but it still hurt. Our defense looked absolutely pathetic, and really, we're lucky it wasn't worse. We were missing shot after shot while letting the Golden Eagles get back in transition and make baskets. No excuse. No excuse whatsoever.

This was the second of four games I saw this weekend, all losses. Just terrible. I can't believe it. And it was the first of three games on Saturday I saw, the first time I've done that in one day. I got back from XL and immediately headed over to Frietas for the women's hockey game. More on that later.

But this is a poor showing. Gameday is the next home game for the men. ESPN will be here, with a show before. That should be fun. Tomorrow we head to Villanova. We'd better win that contest. And hopefully we beat Syracuse as well, although I wouldn't count on it. We could be looking at the NIT if we lose more than two more games this season. That would be embarrassing. Let's hope it doesn't happen.  Especially since we're probably getting a postseason ban next year. That would mean no NCAA Tournament for two consecutive years if we miss out this year. We'd better make it.

Game 2-8-76: Men's Basketball vs. Seton Hall, February 4, 2012

What: Men's Basketball vs. Seton Hall
Where: XL Center
When: Saturday, February 4th, 2012
Result: Win, 69-46

Wow. This was a bizarre game. At least we won, but we didn't deserve to. The thing is, Seton Hall deserved to even less. Turnovers abounded for both teams, and we struggled to make our shots (again). But Seton Hall struggled even worse. Hey, someone has to win, right? Well, yeah. I guess a win is a win. This was pretty much an unremarkable game, I'm sorry. That's all I can say. On a side note, this was the first time I had seen Seton Hall in basketball. The only Big East teams I had not (at the time) seen in hoops of either gender were Rutgers (who I'd see later that night), West Virginia (who I'll never see if they leave), and St. John's (who I'll see in the women's game 12 days from now). But enough of that.

Anyway, one remarkable thing happened. During the first half, they had a student shoot from half court to win a trip to Disney World. He made it! I've never seen that before. It was the best shot of the game. Really, we got lucky to win. We need to do better. I'll have a post on the women up in a few minutes.

Game 2-7-75: Men's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

What: Men's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

Why in the world would we give
away red UConn shirts? And why
would we wear "platinum" and white
jerseys? And do them on the same
day? Oy vey.

When: Sunday, January 29, 2012, 12:00 PM
Where: XL Center
Result: Loss 50-48

Well, the first story was the uniforms. Those hideous contraptions Nike got nine of their favorite schools to wear. Well, they're terrible. Gray (pardon me, Nike says "platinum") and white are hardly befitting of the American Flag Blue and white we love. That's why in the InstantDaily a few days ago, I proposed changing our fight song to conform with the new color scheme. Alas, "Connecticut UConn Husky / Vict'ry again for the white and gray / So Go Go Go / Connecticut, Hip Hooray!" did not become a hit.

Oh, and then they left red shirts on all the student seats. Why red? The only red we wore was our shoes. It's all stupid. And some students were taking 10 or more shirts off of other seats. That's wrong. You get one, I get one, everyone gets wrong. Don't do that. The people next to me were very upset they didn't get shirts. Be nice.

As for the game itself, frankly, it was pitiful. We couldn't make baskets, we couldn't box out, and we were lucky to only lose by two. We missed a ton of chances to come back, including right at the end, and couldn't do it. Plus, the refs made several questionable calls. Most of them were closer than the crowd thought, but they shouldn't all be going one way. At least Ryan Boatright came back. But he didn't do much.

So now it's been three state losses. We need to do better. We could be in the NIT if this continues. With Boatright back, maybe we'll be better. But it only gets harder from here. At Georgetown, a home game vs. Seton Hall that we need to win, and then at Louisville and Syracuse. A Wednesday night game vs. DePaul at Gampel should be easy, and if we lose that, we're done. But then it's Marquette in Hartford, at Villanova, and College Gameday against Syracuse. We wrap up in Providence (who gives us trouble) before hosting Pitt. If we go .500, we're 9-9 in conference, and 19-11 overall. We probably will need to do better than that. Let's hope so.

Between the ugly uniforms, the ugly play, and the ugly reffing, this was terrible to watch. Yet we almost won. Funny how that stuff works, isn't it? Let's hope we do better next time.

Game 2-2-70: Men's Basketball vs. Cincinnati

What: Men's Basketball vs. Cincinnati
When: Wednesday, January 18, 7:00 PM
Where: Gampel Pavilion
Result: Loss, 70-67

This was my first look in person at a young Huskies team. And for most of the game, we played very poorly. Our team trailed 42-33 at halftime and we were booed off the court. It seemed Kemba Walker couldn't bring the same magic from the stands that he did on the court.

The second half didn't start out much better, and soon the Bearcats were up 48-37. Then Tyler Olander made a layup to cut it to single-digits, and our fortune began to change. Niels Giffey made a three-pointer, and Jeremy Lamb made a layup off a block by Andre Drummond. Lead was down to four - timeout Cincinnati. The Bearcats turned it over leading into the media timeout, and Jeremy Lamb hit a jumper to cut it to a two-point game. But Shabazz Napier missed a three which would have given us the lead. A Yancy Gates layup at the other end brought the lead back up to four, But we managed to go on a 6-0  run to take a 52-50 lead. Stand up Gampel!

This excitement would quickly be deflated, however, by a Dion Dixon three-pointer. A series of back-and-forth buckets gave us a 57-55 lead with 6:35 to go. But it seemed Cincy was doing everything right, including making threes. And Cashmere Wright hit one to put them up by a point. Before we knew it, the 'Cats were on a 10-0 run to go up 65-57 with 2:53 left. It seemed all but over and the fans started heading towards the exits as an irate Jim Calhoun took a time out.

Fortunately, Gampel is poorly designed and most of them were still stuck in the aisles when Shabazz Napier hit two quick threes to cut it to a 66-63 game with 1:04 left. (So that's why they cramped the aisles together...) Dion Dixon missed a jumper and Shabazz got the rebound. He was then fouled on a layup drive and sent to the line for two. He made the first and barely missed the second. 66-64, 22 seconds left. Napier fouled Dixon, who made the first but missed the second. And then it was Shabazz again, making a three to tie the game at 67-67. And the arena went wild. Alas, Sean Kilpatrick made a three with 2.7 second left, appearing to put the Bearcats up for good. But Calhoun called a timeout to set us up for one last chance. Inbounds to Olander, desperation heave, and.... off the front of the rim, just short! Basketball is a game of inches, and a few inches stronger could have meant overtime. But, it didn't.

Not what I wanted to see this team do. I just hope I'm not the bringer of bad luck to the team. Well, it doesn't look like my night class will be canceled at this point, so my next game will be men's ice hockey Saturday night.

Oh, and remember what I said about "game of inches"? Well, during one of the TV timeouts, a fan (overenergentic student) had one chance to make a half court shot to win a seven-day, four-person trip to Disney World. Not much of a chance, right? Alas, the ball rolled around the cylinder, and then out. Poor kid.

Men's Ice Hockey: On Wednesday night, Alex Gerke recorded a Hat trick in a 8-3 blowout over Sacred Heart. Good to see the Huskies win again. Next up is a game at Yale tomorrow at 7:00 PM. It will be on WHUS.

Men's Basketball: The Huskies defeated Maine 80-60 last night. Maine was within six at halftime, but the Huskies did a great job pulling away in the second. I didn't get a chance to watch anything but highlights so i can't comment much, but we're 3-0 against three weak teams that we should have done better against.

Men's Soccer: Monmouth beat Stony Brook on Penalty Kicks last night, so we will face them Sunday at 1:00 in the Second Round o the NCAA Tournament. The game will be on WHUS and UConnHuskies.com. Winner will face either Wake Forest or #14 James Madison next Sunday.

Field Hockey: The Huskies currently lead UNC 3-0 with 15 minutes to go in the National Semifinal. Winner will face the late game winner (Maryland or Old Dominion) for the championship on Sunday at noon. Watch today's game here. Update 3:22 PM: Goal UNC. 12:20 left and it's 3-1.Update 3:30 PM: UNC scored another goal apparently making it 3-2, but it was wiped off for being too high. Still 3-1, under five minutes to go. Tar Heels have a man advantage since they pulled the goalie.Update 3:35 PM: 3-2. 56.5 seconds left.Update 3:36 PM: And the Tar Heels get another goal. 23.6 seconds left in regulation and a 3-3 tie. I'll post a fuller summary when it's done.Update 4:00 PM: UConn successfully defends two penalty corners to wrap up a scoreless OT1. Fifteen more minutes of sudden victory and then penalty strokes if we're still tied.Update 4;11: Goal Tarheels. UNC wins 4-3.

I've been a bit busy lately, but I'll try to update this more regularly.

Men's Soccer: By now you've probably heard it, but the men's soccer team made it to the Big East Final before losing 1-0 in OT to St. John's. They will face the winner of Monmouth and Stony Brook in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 1:00 PM. That game is free on uconnhuskies.com. It will also be on WHUS.

Men's Ice Hockey: Gets underway at 7:05 PM tonight from Freitas against Sacred Heart. The Huskies will look to get back to winning ways after a tough weekend. That game will be live on WHUS as well.

Women's Hockey: Continues to struggle, having been shut out three straight games and has one win this whole season. They need to turn it around quickly. They will face Boston University on the road this Saturday at 3:00 before hosting Vermont Sunday at 2:00.

Football: The Huskies are 4-5 and need to win two of three to get a bowl bid. They will host Louisville and Rutgers before heading to Cincinnati. All games will be at noon on Saturdays, with the Louisville one being on SNY/Big East Regional Network. We may get a bowl bid, but we don't deserve one. In any case, hopefully Scott McCummings gets more action this weekend after his comeback vs. Syracuse.

Men's Basketball: The Huskies are 2-0 after wins over Columbia and Wagner and will head to XL Center for the first time tomorrow when they host Maine at 7:00 on SNY. They should win that game, but the Wagner game was closer than it should have been, so you never know.

Women's Basketball: The  #4 Huskies routed Pacific last night, 112-53. Those are the Huskies we're used to, blowing teams out. Kareena Mosqueda-Lewis led the way with 25 points, while Bria Hartley added 18. Kelly Farris had six steals. Next up is #5 Stanford on Monday at 7:30 on ESPNU. Big game for the Huskies at home.

Field Hockey: The #4 seeded Huskies will face the #1 overall seed UNC in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament at Trager Stadium in Louisville. That game will be at 2:00 PM Friday and video can be seen here at that time. In the later game, unseeded powerhouse Maryland faces Old Dominion, with the winner facing the Huskies or Tarheels on November 20th (Sunday) at Noon for the championship.

Men's Soccer: We're on to the Big East Final! We defeated Louisville 1-0 yesterday thanks to a perfect strike from distance off the foot of Stephane Diop in the 81st minute. We will face St. John's in the final tomorrow at noon. That game is available nationally on CBS Sports Network and locally on SNY and other regional television.

Field Hockey: The Huskies defeated Princeton, 3-2 earlier today. They will face the winner of Penn State-Northeastern in the Quarterfinals tomorrow at 2:00. Anne Jeute scored two goals for the Huskies and Chloe Hunnable added a third.

Men's Basketball: The Huskies opened up the season by beating Columbia, 70-57.  Jeremy Lamb led the way with 30 points. The Huskies will next face Wagner on Monday at 7:30. That game will be at Gampel Pavilion and air on SNY. A 13 point win over a .500 team from the Ivy League is decent, but we hardly blew them out of the water. Also, the championship banner was unveiled, but not before technical difficulties delayed the dropping of the tarp.

Women's Basketball: It's opening day for the Huskies tomorrow at 2:00 as they host the Holy Cross Crusaders. That game will be on CPTV live from Gampel. It should be an easy win.

Thursday Morning UConn Huskies Roundup (October 13th, 2011)

Good morning, UConn fans! It's starting to get chilly here in the Northeast. But it's now just over three months until I go back to school from medical leave. Here's your roundup.

Men's and Women's Basketball: First Night is this Friday night at 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:00. Pretty much the only remotely interesting thing they do all night is introduce this year's players.  They also have giveaways that with several thousand fans competing, you're probably not winning. If you don't want to waste an hour or more of your time just watching this overrated garbage, there's plenty of other sports stuff you can do Friday night at 7:00 PM. Read on for more.

Football: The homecoming game is this Saturday at 3:30 PM vs. USF. Forecast is mostly sunny and a high near 67. The Huskies are 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in Big East play. If we want any chance of going to a bowl this season, we probably have to win this game. Otherwise, we need to go 4-1 down the stretch, which is doubtful. Even 3-2 I doubt we can do. But if we start 2-5, we're almost certainly not going bowling this December.

Men's Soccer: Well, the shutout streak is over. After 961 minutes and 32 seconds, the Huskies conceded a goal on a bad angle shot that Andre Blake really should have saved. Nevertheless, thanks to two goals by Mamadou Doudou Diouf, the Huskies won 2-1. This was almost a disaster for UConn, however. With the score 2-1 and time running out, Andrew John-Baptiste headed a ball away from danger just before it crossed the goal line. That would have made it 2-2 and the Friars would have had all the momentum heading into Overtime. Instead, a win's a win, and the Huskies will take it. Next up, the Huskies will host Pittsburgh on Saturday at 7:30 PM. That game will be on All-Access, but evidently not WHUS. With a 3-0-1 record in Big East play (and 12-0-1 overall), the Huskies are in second place in the Blue Division, two points behind Marquette and one ahead of Georgetown and West Virginia. The Huskies have not faced any of those teams yet, and will face the Mountaineers in Morgantown and the other two at home.

Women's Soccer: The Huskies will conclude their home schedule with two games this weekend. First, on Friday night at 7:00 PM (First Night time), they will host the Pittsburgh Panthers at Morrone Stadium. Then on Sunday at 1:00 PM, it's Senior Day, as the American Division leading West Virginia Mountaineers come rolling in. The Huskies are 3-3-2 on the season in Big East play, and 6-6-2 overall. This puts them a mere two points ahead of Providence for the final Big East Tournament spot. The Huskies and Friars will square off in Providence on Saturday, October 22nd, in the final game of the season for both teams. As UConn's travel partner, the Friars will also host West Virginia and Pitt this weekend. So, it's a critical end to the year. As for game coverage, the West Virginia game will be on All-Access, while Pitt will not be. Both games will be on WHUS, however.

Women's Ice Hockey: On Friday and Saturday, the Huskies will play host to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Friday's game will be at 7:00 PM (First Night time), while Saturday's will be at 4:00 PM. UMD is ranked #7 in the country, so these games will be a major challenge for us.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Huskies open Atlantic Hockey play on Friday night at 7:05 as they travel to West Point to face Army. Live video is available on Army's website. The Black Knights have played one game this year, an 8-1 loss to Union.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies will return to Gampel Saturday night at 7:00 PM to face St. John's. The Red Storm also do not have a win in Big East play, so this is a very winnable game to get back on the right track.

Field Hockey: The Huskies host Princeton on Sunday at 2:00 PM for the first of two non-conference meetings this year. The Tigers have had a very disappointing season and will look to prove something against the #4 Huskies. Next Sunday is an even bigger game for UConn, as they host #5 Syracuse in a contest that will almost certainly decide the Big East regular season champion.

Men's and Women's Basketball: Friday Night is First Night. It is the biggest mockery of basketball that will happen all year. But if you're interested, the event starts at 7:00 and doors open at 6:00. More info here.

Football: Following the humiliating loss to West Virginia, the Huskies return home to host USF on Saturday at 3:30 PM. That game will be on SNY and Big East Regional Television. This is pretty much a must-win game for the Huskies who come in 2-4 and 0-1 in Big East play. After USF, they head to Pitt in a nationally televised game on Wednesday, Octoer 26th, so it doesn't get any easier. But why are they playing college football on Wednesday nights? Ridiculous.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Huskies will open up their Atlantic Hockey Schedule on Friday night as they travel to West Point to face Army. The Huskies are 0-1-1 on the season and are looking to live up to heightened expectations following their AHA semifinals appearance last year.

Men's Soccer: The Huskies will look to extend their shutout and unbeaten streaks Wednesday at home against Providence.  They will wrap up the homestand Saturday against Pittsburgh. Both games are at 7:30 PM. They are each available on All-Access but only Providence will be on WHUS due to the football game. The NCAA record for shutouts is 11 games without allowing a goal, and right now the Huskies have gone nine. So, that record could fall soon. For now though, the Huskies are 11-0-1 overall, and 2-0-1 in Big East play. Critical home games against Georgetown and Marquette are still to come. 

Field Hockey: Just one game for the Huskies this week, Sunday at 2:00 PM against Princeton. The Huskies actually face Princeton twice this year, the other time being in the last game of the season. But the Tigers have had a disappointing year this year. The Huskies will be looking to take the victory. After the Princeton matchup, the Huskies will host Boston University under the lights on the 19th, before hosting Syracuse at noon on the 23rd in a game that will in all likelihood, decide the Big East regular season champion. The Huskies will clinch the regular season title with a win there, and if the Orange beat Georgetown on Friday (which they should) it will assure them the title with a win as well. Normally, I'd say this doesn't matter, but with the "Big Three" of UConn, Syracuse, and Louisville, and the Cardinals almost certainly getting the #3 seed, it would help to avoid them. 

Women's Ice Hockey: The 0-2-2 Huskies look to notch one in the win column when they play a two game series against Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs will come into Freitas Ice Forum on Friday at 7:00 PM (note: the same time First Night begins) and again on Saturday at 4:00.

Women's Soccer: The Huskies wrap up their home season this weekend with games against Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Pitt game will begin at 7:00 PM on Friday (same time as First Night) while they will face West Virginia on Sunday at 1:00 PM on Senior Day. They will conclude the regular season on Saturday, October 22nd at Providence at 1:00 PM. Currently, the Huskies are two points ahead of the Friars for the final Big East playoff spot and one point behind St. John's for the right to host an Opening Round game. They will almost certainly play in the 4-5 matchup instead of bypassing the Opening Round, since #3 Syracuse has 15 points, four more than the Huskies with three games to go.

Women's Volleyball: Coming off a narrow loss to USF, the Huskies will look to bounce back. They wrap up their non-conference slate tomorrow at 7:00 PM against Fordham, before hosting St. John's Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Rams game will be on All-Access, while the Red Storm matchup will only be on GameTracker. St. John's is even with the Huskies at the bottom of the Big East at 0-5. So, this is a game the Huskies can win.

Update 4:50 PM: Three Huskies were announced as weekly award winners earlier today. Men's soccer Goalkeeper Andre Blake was named Big East Rookie of the Week after his 9th straight shutout and Field Hockey freshman phenom Chloe Hunnable received Big East Offensive Player of the Week thanks to her three goals and one assist. Additionally, Brant Harris was named Atlantic Hockey Offensive Player of the Week thanks to his three goals over the weekend.

Miscellaneous Blog/Personal News: My surgery is Monday. If you want to know more, email me. In any case, this will render me unable to post on the blog for about a week, maybe a little less. If you want updates on your favorite teams, check out the Athletic Website.

Football: The big travel game for the Huskies is today at 7:30 PM at Vanderbilt. That game will air locally on SNY and ESPN3.com (though the latter will likely be showing the Comcast Sports South Broadcast). Also, the SNY broadcast is not Big East Regional Television so I have no idea if it's the same production crew. In any case, the Huskies QB situation is still not settled, though I think McCummings and McEntee will get most of the playing time. And now we may see issues at running back too after Lyle McCombs had a great week last week while presumed starter DJ Shoemate was hurt. There are a lot of questions to be answered when the Huskies take the field tonight. I'm looking forward to it.

Men's Soccer: The #3 team in the country defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as part of the Hurricane Classic. The final score was 1-0. Mamadou Doudou Diouf got a goal in the 25th minute. Next up, the Huskies will take on SMU at 12:30 PM Sunday, also in Tulsa. That game is on WHUS.org and WHUS 91.7 FM.

Field Hockey: The #4 ranked Huskies host Albany today at noon and Drexel tomorrow at 2 PM. Next weekend, the Huskies open Big East play on Saturday when they host Villanova. They will then host Boston College on Sunday the 18th.

Women's Soccer: The Huskies defeated #20/23 Boston University, 3-0. It snapped BU's 5-game win streak. The Huskies are now 3-2-0, after their win before 1,404 fans. It was scoreless at halftime, but Danielle Schullman scored in the 53rd minute, and Julie Hubbard and Jessica Prendergast added goals later on to seal the deal. Next up, the Huskies will travel to Harvard on Sunday at 1 PM to face the Crimson.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies defeated Fairfield three sets to one in the opener of the UNH Tournament. The Huskies will face Indiana State at 10 AM today and the host New Hampshire Wildcats at 7 PM to wrap up the tournament. The Huskies are 5-3 on the season and have already won one tournament at home.

Basketball: UConn agreed yesterday to play in the second edition of the Carrier Classic in 2012. UConn will play a game atop a military aircraft carrier in San Diego Bay, on November 9, 2012. Their opponent is TBD but may be Kansas, Texas, Florida, Arizona, or Illinois. This is very exciting for the Huskies to be doing something like this.

Today's roundup

Football: The football game vs. Fordham originally scheduled for tonight will now be Saturday at noon. Saturday is my dad's birthday so I will probably be out with him at that time. I may catch some of it on the radio, I'm really not sure. Either way, we'll see there. Should be a blowout anyway.

Men's soccer: UConn defeated Michigan State tonight 2-1. Mamadou Douodou Diouf scored his first goal of the season and Max Wasserman added the game winner on a free kick. Next up is a huge game vs. California Sunday at 7:30 4:30 PM at Morrone Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 7:30 but has been changed because of power outages. No word yet on whether it will air on WHUS and/or All-Access.

Women's Soccer: The women's soccer team heads on the road for the first time this year. Tomorrow, they will face Wake Forest in Winston-Salem at 6:00 PM and on Sunday, they will face Virginia Tech in Winston-Salem at 11:30 AM. The former will be available on Wake Forest's website, and both will be on WHUS 91.7 FM and WHUS.org (although the audio on the Demon Deacon's site will be theirs). UConn is 1-1 so far this season.

Women's Volleyball: Toyota UConn Classic starts tomorrow night. Binghamton vs. Howard at 5:00, then the Huskies take on Holy Cross at 7:30. On Saturday, each team plays two games. The Bearcats face the Crusaders at 10:00 AM, followed by the Huskies taking on Howard at 12:30. Then at 5:00, it's Howard-Holy Cross, followed by UConn-Binghamton at 7:30 to close it out.

Men's and Women's Basketball: Both teams released their full schedules yesterday. The women's basketball game on Martin Luther King Day will be at Gampel, so I can attend that one when I (finally) return to campus. Also my first week back, the men host Cincinnati at 7:00 at Gampel. Note: I was supposed to post this back in July, when I was doing my Top 10 games countdown. Unfortunately, it got stuck in my drafts and I never got around to posting it. So here it is, in its entirety, as it was written then, with a few notations.

My apologies for not posting this yesterday. This is game #3 on the Top 10 games I attended in 2010-11 list.

What: Men's Basketball vs. Villanova (original link)

Where: Gampel Pavillion, Storrs, CT

Result: Win 61-59

This was my first game of the Spring 2011 Semester. It was also Martin Luther King Day. Since 2002, I had always gone to a Knicks game with my family on MLK Day. This year, however, because the semester (should have) started the next day, I was back at UConn attending this game. It was nice - other than the soccer exhibition vs. Boston University over WOW Weekend, it was the only time I got to go to a game without worrying about schoolwork.

As for the game itself, it was close all along. Villanova tied it with 22 seconds to go and Kemba Walker hit a game winning shot with a second left to make it 61-59. And as for classes the next day, they were cancelled due to snow. They would be cancelled several more times over the next couple weeks. But this was the first game I attended Spring Semester.

Game #2 will likely be posted this Sunday as I will be in New Jersey on Monday for a wedding (my cousin ironically is getting married on Independence Day). Game #1 will be revealed July 11, after which I will likely not be reposting until August when I go back to school. (So much for that. If only...)

On a side note, the men's ice hockey schedule was released today. A post on that is upcoming. (Find that here)

Top 10 Games Countdown #6: Men's Basketball vs. Stony Brook, November 12, 2010

Note: I neglected to post this entry this past week on Monday as I should have. Therefore, it will be posted now, game #5, which should have been posted today, will be posted on FRIDAY, and I will resume the normal schedule next Monday with game #4.

What: Men's Basketball vs Stony Brook

Result: Win 79-52

This was my first UConn basketball game that actually counted. I had been to a men's and women's  exhibition game, and I had been at Gampel several times for women's volleyball, but this was something else entirely. The game was nearly sold out, it was opening night, and the student section was crazy.

This was not a remarkable game in itself. UConn won in a blowout, as would be expected against a lesser opponent like the Seawolves. However, as has been a theme throughout this countdown, the fact that it was the FIRST basketball game I attended (or at least the first that meant anything) was enough to get it this high on the list. I would attend many more basketball games throughout the season, both at Gampel and XL Center, but this was one of the most memorable contests I have seen merely because it was the first. As a spoiler (roll over to highlight it and see it if you want to, otherwise don't do it) there is only one other men's game on this list as well as one women's game, and they were both much more exciting in terms of on-the court action than this one was.

In any case, we all remember what came first. I remember far more about this game than I do about the second men's game I attended, November 30 against New Hampshire (which apparently I didn't make a blog post about here, although I know I was at that game and the Game Log agrees with me). So, this game will always be memorable for me, even if it was a blowout.

March 5 (Game 60): Men's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

Result: Loss 70-67

This was disappointing. Senior Day, and also Kemba Walker Day apparently, since they honored him. He's almost certainly leaving early to go to the NBA, but at least he's graduating over the summer. I'll give him credit for that. Most early jumpers don't. Anyway, as for the game itself, we got off to an early lead then played back and forth basketball. Ben Hansborough appeared to be the key cog in the Irish offense, but he fouled out with ND down 5 and they still managed to come back. And the "Tyler's Better" chants were pretty amusing.

So that's the last home game for Men's basketball this year. We'll have two (assuming they beat the 16 seed) women's basketball NCAA Tournament games (plus possibly a third involving the 8-9 matchup) that I'll be at and then we're wholly into spring sports. My how time flies. It seems like just yesterday, I was attending my first UConn sporting event, a 1-0 soccer win over Boston University my first weekend at school. Kind of makes me wonder what would have happened if I didn't attend that game. I made a moment decision to attend the Goal Patrol meeting that night, and went to every meeting thereafter. I'd probably not have gone to any soccer games this season. The fact is, when I first came here, I didn't intend to go to any games other than basketball, football, and maybe baseball. But now I've been to Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Ice Hockey, and I would have been to a Women's Lacrosse game were it not for the nasty weather. And I will be at a Women's Lacrosse game in the future. Would I have done all that if I didn't get into it right away? I don't know. It's interesting to think about it.

So this basketball season has been fun, and here's to March Madness. Go Huskies!

February 24 (Game 56): Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

What: Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

Where: XL Center

Result: Loss, 74-67 (OT)

This was very disappointing, to say the least. We were leading for most of the game, before falling apart late. Marquette managed to tie the game in the final seconds and send it to Overtime, but we simply had nothing left. Awful game. Fortunately, we beat Cincinnati today, so we might get one bye in the Big East Tournament. This is a tough conference this year. And if we play like this in the NCAA Tournament, we're going to lose. So hopefully we don't. I'll be at one more men's game this year, next Saturday, Senior Day, against Notre Dame. We also are at West Virginia in a couple days. So it's a big stretch for us.

February 16, 2011 (Game 52): Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown

What: Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown

When: Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Win 78-70

This was a pretty back-and-forth game. Georgetown got off to an early lead really frustrating fans, but UConn came back. The key turning point was Kemba Walker shooting it off the backboard then grabbing the rebound and laying it in. Amazing play.

That being said, nothing too exciting happened this game. The action was somewhat back-and-forth but really no good plays other than the Kemba one. And nothing interesting happened in the crowd other than the obvious question of What's a Hoya? But no really amusing stuff. In any case, we're back for Women's Basketball and Men's Ice Hockey tomorrow, and then Women's Ice Hockey on Sunday.

I arrived at this game only an hour before tip or so due to a delayed return from the Hockey Fest. This meant that I was sitting a bit higher up then I wanted, but still in the lower level. This started out looking like we were going to play horribly. The fans were getting restless and booing, but thankfully Providence wasn't making shots either. We went on a mini run to close the half and led 33-30. We then woudn up tied 39-39 but then Combs-McDaniel went on an amazing point rampage and led us to a 75-57 victory. I unfortunately left with a few minutes to go because I wasn't feeling well (although I felt fine an hour later - strange) but I saw most of the game. It was the second game I was at in the same day, which meant some of my energy was zapped, but it was still pretty good. Next up is Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma tonight, and we've got a pretty busy week with three basketball games and two hockey games. Should be fun.
