Game 2-13-81: Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

I'm keeping this post short because I'm busy with midterms. Starting with Gameday, I'll be able to say a lot more.

Result: Loss, 79-64

Really disappointing loss for the Huskies. I was sort of expecting it, but it still hurt. Our defense looked absolutely pathetic, and really, we're lucky it wasn't worse. We were missing shot after shot while letting the Golden Eagles get back in transition and make baskets. No excuse. No excuse whatsoever.

This was the second of four games I saw this weekend, all losses. Just terrible. I can't believe it. And it was the first of three games on Saturday I saw, the first time I've done that in one day. I got back from XL and immediately headed over to Frietas for the women's hockey game. More on that later.

But this is a poor showing. Gameday is the next home game for the men. ESPN will be here, with a show before. That should be fun. Tomorrow we head to Villanova. We'd better win that contest. And hopefully we beat Syracuse as well, although I wouldn't count on it. We could be looking at the NIT if we lose more than two more games this season. That would be embarrassing. Let's hope it doesn't happen.  Especially since we're probably getting a postseason ban next year. That would mean no NCAA Tournament for two consecutive years if we miss out this year. We'd better make it.

Result: Loss 50-48

Well, the first story was the uniforms. Those hideous contraptions Nike got nine of their favorite schools to wear. Well, they're terrible. Gray (pardon me, Nike says "platinum") and white are hardly befitting of the American Flag Blue and white we love. That's why in the InstantDaily a few days ago, I proposed changing our fight song to conform with the new color scheme. Alas, "Connecticut UConn Husky / Vict'ry again for the white and gray / So Go Go Go / Connecticut, Hip Hooray!" did not become a hit.

Oh, and then they left red shirts on all the student seats. Why red? The only red we wore was our shoes. It's all stupid. And some students were taking 10 or more shirts off of other seats. That's wrong. You get one, I get one, everyone gets wrong. Don't do that. The people next to me were very upset they didn't get shirts. Be nice.

As for the game itself, frankly, it was pitiful. We couldn't make baskets, we couldn't box out, and we were lucky to only lose by two. We missed a ton of chances to come back, including right at the end, and couldn't do it. Plus, the refs made several questionable calls. Most of them were closer than the crowd thought, but they shouldn't all be going one way. At least Ryan Boatright came back. But he didn't do much.

So now it's been three state losses. We need to do better. We could be in the NIT if this continues. With Boatright back, maybe we'll be better. But it only gets harder from here. At Georgetown, a home game vs. Seton Hall that we need to win, and then at Louisville and Syracuse. A Wednesday night game vs. DePaul at Gampel should be easy, and if we lose that, we're done. But then it's Marquette in Hartford, at Villanova, and College Gameday against Syracuse. We wrap up in Providence (who gives us trouble) before hosting Pitt. If we go .500, we're 9-9 in conference, and 19-11 overall. We probably will need to do better than that. Let's hope so.

Between the ugly uniforms, the ugly play, and the ugly reffing, this was terrible to watch. Yet we almost won. Funny how that stuff works, isn't it? Let's hope we do better next time.

Husky Sports Roundup, October 30th 2011

No internet, phone, or tv at my house due to the storm. I'm here at Fishkill All-Sport writing this post on the wi-fi. 

Men's Soccer: The game against Seton Hall was changed to 6 PM tonight. Marquette beat Pitt and West Virginia beat Notre Dame, so a win against the Pirates nets us second place in the Blue Division wile a loss or draw nets us third. As the #3 seed, we would host DePaul in the First Round for the second year in a row and if we win, we will play at Rutgers in the quarterfinals. If we get the #2 seed, we will host the winner of St. John's and either Notre Dame of Georgetown, depending on whether the Fighting Irish can beat the Pirates tomorrow. 

Field Hockey: The game today vs. Princeton was canceled since Princeton needs to play Cornell today due to the snow yesterday. Big East Tournament Semifinal vs. Louisville is next on Friday at 12:30 PM.

Men's Ice Hockey: The game against Army has been postponed and will be Tuesday, February 7th at 7:05 PM.
