There will be away games at USF and Yale and home games vs. Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Rutgers. All other non-conference games are home. AAC Tournament is at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas for Semifinals and Finals. 8-9 matchup will be at location of #1 seed November 8, followed by Quarterfinals November 9 at higher seed. Note: It appears we play all the old Big East teams, plus associate member Old Dominion and new member Temple. Like the women, the men will play home-and-home with teams in the AAC. According to this, we will also host UMass-Lowell, who is transitioning to D1. I would assume this is a regular-season game, but since we played them in an exhibition last year, this could be a previously-scheduled exhibition game.

Men's Ice Hockey:

According to tweets from Will Moran, the non-conference schedule will be (in no particular order) 

2 games At Minnesota State; At Boston University; vs. Union; At Providence; Vs. Sacred Heart (non-league); Vs. Quinnipiac or UMass (Holiday Tournament)

However, it is possible Sacred Heart is a conference game in the first round of the Holiday Tournament, as that usually happens. Actually, it was due to a scheduling error that they decided to keep. Sacred Heart will NOT count as a conference game. (see this tweet)

The American Conference Tournament will be May 21-25 at Bright House Field in Clearwater.  According to Chris Jones, there will be two pools. Teams will play everyone in their pool and the winners play for the championship. AAC Home Series against Temple, Houston, UCF and Rutgers. AAC Away Series at Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, and USF. USF will be the back end of spring break.

Game 2-15-83: Women's Basketball vs. St. John's

What: Women's Basketball vs. St. John's
Where: Gampel Pavilion
When: Saturday, February 18, 7:00 PM
Result: Loss, 55-54

This was the Senior Night game, and Tiffany Hayes was honored before the game along with eight student managers. Which begs the question - why do they have eight senior student managers? Were they all freshmen together? Will we have all eight new student managers next year? Or do we also have eight managers from all other classes, for a grand total of 32? And if so, WHY? I don't know. Seems strange.

But the real shock was the game. St. John's played well throughout, keeping it close, and led 34-32 at halftime. The fans were in shock. Could we lose at home, and to St. John's nonetheless? Well, we did. It was 54-52 late. St. John's had the ball off a timeout. They inbounded it, kicked it out for a three, and made it! 55-54, UConn women losing at home. Whoah. An the arena was stunned. About 5 seconds left. We got it down the court, and kicked it out for a three, which we missed. We probably didn't get it off in time anyway. But it doesn't matter.

Well, this is disappointing. You've got to feel sorry for Tiffany Hayes. She never lost at home. And on Senior Night, she did. Well, I sort of predicted this. When I looked at the schedule before the season, I thought we would lose on Senior Night. Of course, I thought the Notre Dame game in Hartford next week was Senior Night. But I was still right (sort of). Meh. Not happy about it.

So, it was an 0-4 weekend in games I was at. Pretty bad. But I did manage to attend three games in one day, something I haven't done before.

Game 2-9-77: Women's Basketball vs. Rutgers, February 4th, 2012

What: Women's Basketball vs. Rutgers
When: February 4th 2012, 7:00 PM
Where: Gampel Pavilion
Result: Win 66-34

This was the first time I saw Rutgers play UConn in any sport. I've now seen every Big East team. So that's complete. And UConn completely dominated the Scarlet Knights. I was worried about this game, but I shouldn't have been. We won easily. 66-34. Rutgers committed almost two dozen turnovers. That shouldn't happen. They were worse than Seton Hall was earlier against the men. So long, Jersey teams.

There was also some obnoxious girl in Uggs who threatened to throw them at the players. That was entertaining. Then, during the post-game student loyalty drawing, she tried to bribe Geno to pick her. She was annoying, and probably drunk. Well, let's hope she doesn't come back.

Oh, except the Giants. They won the next night. That was good. Take that, Patriots fans! Super Bowl champs!

Sorry the last two reviews have been short, I've got some studying to do and wanted to get them finished.

Game 2-6-74: Women's Basketball vs. South Florida

What: Women's Basketball vs. South Florida
When: Saturday, January 28, 2012, 1:00 PM
Where: XL Center
Result: Win 77-62

Well, this was certainly below our standards. We won by 15, but seriously, it should have been a lot bigger. For starters, the student section was practically empty. It probably had 100 people, if that. Not a very good showing. Geno would be ashamed of us. And he probably is.

Anyway, back to the game. At halftime, genuine panic filled the XL Center. The Huskies were "only" up by three. And the close game continued throughout much of the second half. Would the Huskies lose at home to a subpar team? Could it possibly happen? No. It couldn't. We managed to pull away.  A few baskets, a Bulls timeout, and a few more baskets, and this one might as well have been over. Tiffany Hayes and Stefanie Dolson were absolutely dominant, combining for almost 60 points. But the rest of the team really struggled. We need more support over the next few weeks with a tough schedule coming up.

On a personal note, I have now seen all but four Big East teams in men's or women's basketball. Rutgers and Seton Hall are two of them, though I will see them both on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights are the only Big East team I haven't seen in any UConn contest. West Virginia will have to wait until next year if they are still in the conference. As for St. John's, I'll see them on Saturday the 18th when their women come to Gampel. So here we go.

But really guys, do better than this. Students, come to games. Lady players, play better. We need to win.

Game #2-1-69: Women's Basketball vs. North Carolina

Note: The title is in the new format for game numbers, which is season-game for season-overall game. So, Game 1 of season 2, Game 69 overall.

What: Women's Basketball vs. North Carolina
When: Monday, January 16th, 7:00 PM
Where: Gampel Pavilion
Result: Win, 86-35

Wow. This was my first game back, and it was a blowout, ugly win for the Huskies. Well, I was at Gampel when doors opened at 5:30, and it felt great to be back. As I was sitting in my seat for 90 minutes before tip-off, I was finally watching UConn. Then, we started pounding the Tar Heels into the ground and things were back to normal.

I couldn't see how many points the Tar Heels had due to the shot clock being in the way, but it didn't much matter sine they weren't doing much scoring anyway. There were times when they'd go six or eight minutes without making a bucket. Once we pulled our starters, they managed to almost cut the lead to 50. Almost... That's pretty bad. Or maybe we're that good. We definitely needed this win to bounce back from what by our very high standards was a rough stretch. The girls seemed to be energized by the students being back. Keep it up!

I managed to snag a free UConn women's poster to hang up in my room (the first UConn poster for me this year) and I got to see us clobber the Tar Heels big time. What a way for me to return. I'm impressed.

Plus, there was the one thing I'd forgotten about since my last women's game - student loyalty. No, I didn't win, but it's still cool. And Geno made fun of some girl who looked like she was 13 but was really a junior. Maybe in high school? Well, let's hope the Huskies continue down this road for the rest of the season.

I may be at the men's game tomorrow night, but will be missing the women's game Thursday for class. Friday I will probably not attend hockey, but Saturday night I will (against Robert Morris). Sunday afternoon is women's hockey vs. Boston College, but that's five days away. We've got some time.

UConn Sports Roundup, November 4th, 2011 (UPDATED 2:03 PM)

J.S. Coyne Field in Syracuse is the setting for this
weekend's Big East Field Hockey Tournament. 

Men's Soccer: The Huskies dominated DePaul in the Big East first round, 4-0. UConn outshot the Blue Demons 26-4 and Carlos Alvarez added two goals, including one on a penalty kick. And frankly, this could have been even more of a blowout. Let's hope the Huskies can keep it up when they head into Rutgers on Sunday at 1 for the quartefinals.

Women's Basketball: Tiffany Hayes and Stephanie Dolson each had a double-double as the Huskies defeated Assumption 89-30 in an exhibition match. This should come as no surprise given that Assumption is Division II. But let's hope we can do well in the real season. Next up, we host Pace in an exhibition on Wednesday, before opening the Season vs. Holy Cross on Sunday, November 13th.

Field Hockey: The Big East Tournament gets underway today at 12:30 as the Huskies take on the Louisville Cardinals at J.S. Coyne Field in Syracuse. After that, the Orange will host Villanova. The two winners will square off at 1:00 PM on Sunday. The Orange will look to take home field advantage, while the Huskies want revenge from last year's beating at home on the hands of Syracuse. Women's Ice Hockey: The Huskies play a home-and-home with Northeastern starting tonight. The leg in Boston will be today at 7:00 PM,  while the red and black Huskies come to Freitas tomorrow at 4:00. The home game can be seen on Huskies All-Access.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Huskies are in Erie, Pa this weekend as they face Mercyhurst tonight and Saturday. Both games are at 7:05.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies will host their final two home games of the season as they face West Virginia (tonight, 7:00 PM) and Pittsburgh (Sunday, 2:00 PM). The Huskies are 3-7 in Big East play, while West Virginia and Pitt are 4-7. Also, the Huskies have won two straight.

Football: The Huskies host the Orange tomorrow at noon on ESPNU. If they want any shot of making a bowl game, the Huskies need to win. A 3-6 start plus games vs. Rutgers and at Cincinnati, and we're done. But we're two point favorites. Let's hope we can win.

UPDATE 2:03 PM: The Huskies trailed 2-0 to Louisville early, but came back to win 3-2. Next up is Cuse or Nova. Summary to follow.

UConn Sports Update, October 21st

Let's take a look ahead to the weekend. The football team is off, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything going on.

Women's Ice Hockey: The Huskies open up their Hockey East schedule at home tonight as they face the Maine Black Bears. The Huskies are 0-4-2 while the Black Bears are 4-2-0 so this should be a very tough matchup. Face-off is at 7:00 PM on WHUS and Huskies All-Access. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2:00 PM, also on All-Access.

Women's Volleyball: Fresh of their first conference win of the season, the Huskies will go on the road tonight and Sunday. Tonight at 7:00, they travel to Villanova, where they face the 13-8 (5-2 Big East) Wildcats. Video is available on 'Nova's website. Then, on Sunday afternoon, they'll be in Georgetown for a 2:00 PM contest. The Hoyas are 2-5 in Big East and 10-10 overall. Video for that is on the Georgetown website.

Men's Soccer: It's Senior Night at Morrone Stadium tomorrow evening at 7:30. The Huskies will host the Georgetown Hoyas in a crucial Big East Blue Division Showdown. Also, the game has SOLD OUT! Lionel Brown, Nickardo Blake, and Tony Cascio will be honored before the game. UConn suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night to West Virginia and will look to bounce back. Currently, the Huskies are two points back of Marquette at the top of the Big East Blue Division, and one point ahead of the Hoyas and Mountaineers. This will be a critical stretch run, ending with the game vs. Marquette on Wednesday night (the Huskies wrap-up their season on Saturday the 29th at Seton Hall, but the Pirates are in last place in the Blue Division and have not won a conference game yet, so that should be an easy win). In any case, tomorrow's game will be on WHUS as well as on All-Access.

Women's Soccer: The Huskies will wrap up their season on Saturday as they head to Providence for a 1:00 PM contest on WHUS. Those in Rhode Island can watch this game on Cox Sports, but everyone else will have to listen to audio or use GameTracker. With a win or tie, the Huskies will clinch a spot in the Big East Tournament,  and will play in an Opening Round match on Thursday afternoon. If they win today, that match will definitely be at home. With a tie, St. John's can overtake them on the tiebreak if they beat Syracuse, and the Huskies will go on the road. Should the Huskies lose, they would still make the Tournament if St. John's doesn't beat the Orange, but once again, that would be a road game. The Red Storm play at 7:00 PM tonight against Syracuse. You can watch that game on the Red Storm website. This means that come tomorrow, we will know exactly what we need to do to get a home game in the Tournament, and to get a game at all.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Men's Ice Hockey team heads to Merrimack tomorrow at 7:00 PM. I have yet to find information on coverage of that game, so check back when it ends.

Field Hockey: The field hockey team hosts Syracuse Sunday at noon in a huge Big East contest. The winner, of course, will clinch the Big East regular season title, so this is likely a preview of the Championship Game, which will be in Syracuse on November 6th. But for all we said about avoiding Louisville, it may not even apply or matter. The Cardinals have lost five of six and are in fourth place in the conference, tied with Rutgers for the last Tournament spot. The Cards do own the tiebreak, however and their remaining opponent is Providence while the Scarlet Knights have to host us a week from today. We will wrap up the regular season a week from Sunday at Princeton, before heading up to the Big East Championship in Syracuse Friday-Sunday.

Women's Basketball: For the first time since 2005, the Huskies are not pre-season favorites to win the Big East. Notre Dame edged the Huskies in the poll by a mere three points, 219-216, with 9-7 on first place votes. The Huskies' first game is November 13th vs. Holy Cross.

Thursday Morning UConn Huskies Roundup (October 13th, 2011)

Good morning, UConn fans! It's starting to get chilly here in the Northeast. But it's now just over three months until I go back to school from medical leave. Here's your roundup.

Men's and Women's Basketball: First Night is this Friday night at 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:00. Pretty much the only remotely interesting thing they do all night is introduce this year's players.  They also have giveaways that with several thousand fans competing, you're probably not winning. If you don't want to waste an hour or more of your time just watching this overrated garbage, there's plenty of other sports stuff you can do Friday night at 7:00 PM. Read on for more.

Football: The homecoming game is this Saturday at 3:30 PM vs. USF. Forecast is mostly sunny and a high near 67. The Huskies are 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in Big East play. If we want any chance of going to a bowl this season, we probably have to win this game. Otherwise, we need to go 4-1 down the stretch, which is doubtful. Even 3-2 I doubt we can do. But if we start 2-5, we're almost certainly not going bowling this December.

Men's Soccer: Well, the shutout streak is over. After 961 minutes and 32 seconds, the Huskies conceded a goal on a bad angle shot that Andre Blake really should have saved. Nevertheless, thanks to two goals by Mamadou Doudou Diouf, the Huskies won 2-1. This was almost a disaster for UConn, however. With the score 2-1 and time running out, Andrew John-Baptiste headed a ball away from danger just before it crossed the goal line. That would have made it 2-2 and the Friars would have had all the momentum heading into Overtime. Instead, a win's a win, and the Huskies will take it. Next up, the Huskies will host Pittsburgh on Saturday at 7:30 PM. That game will be on All-Access, but evidently not WHUS. With a 3-0-1 record in Big East play (and 12-0-1 overall), the Huskies are in second place in the Blue Division, two points behind Marquette and one ahead of Georgetown and West Virginia. The Huskies have not faced any of those teams yet, and will face the Mountaineers in Morgantown and the other two at home.

Women's Soccer: The Huskies will conclude their home schedule with two games this weekend. First, on Friday night at 7:00 PM (First Night time), they will host the Pittsburgh Panthers at Morrone Stadium. Then on Sunday at 1:00 PM, it's Senior Day, as the American Division leading West Virginia Mountaineers come rolling in. The Huskies are 3-3-2 on the season in Big East play, and 6-6-2 overall. This puts them a mere two points ahead of Providence for the final Big East Tournament spot. The Huskies and Friars will square off in Providence on Saturday, October 22nd, in the final game of the season for both teams. As UConn's travel partner, the Friars will also host West Virginia and Pitt this weekend. So, it's a critical end to the year. As for game coverage, the West Virginia game will be on All-Access, while Pitt will not be. Both games will be on WHUS, however.

Women's Ice Hockey: On Friday and Saturday, the Huskies will play host to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Friday's game will be at 7:00 PM (First Night time), while Saturday's will be at 4:00 PM. UMD is ranked #7 in the country, so these games will be a major challenge for us.

Men's Ice Hockey: The Huskies open Atlantic Hockey play on Friday night at 7:05 as they travel to West Point to face Army. Live video is available on Army's website. The Black Knights have played one game this year, an 8-1 loss to Union.

Women's Volleyball: The Huskies will return to Gampel Saturday night at 7:00 PM to face St. John's. The Red Storm also do not have a win in Big East play, so this is a very winnable game to get back on the right track.

Field Hockey: The Huskies host Princeton on Sunday at 2:00 PM for the first of two non-conference meetings this year. The Tigers have had a very disappointing season and will look to prove something against the #4 Huskies. Next Sunday is an even bigger game for UConn, as they host #5 Syracuse in a contest that will almost certainly decide the Big East regular season champion.

Football: The football game vs. Fordham originally scheduled for tonight will now be Saturday at noon. Saturday is my dad's birthday so I will probably be out with him at that time. I may catch some of it on the radio, I'm really not sure. Either way, we'll see there. Should be a blowout anyway.

Men's soccer: UConn defeated Michigan State tonight 2-1. Mamadou Douodou Diouf scored his first goal of the season and Max Wasserman added the game winner on a free kick. Next up is a huge game vs. California Sunday at 7:30 4:30 PM at Morrone Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 7:30 but has been changed because of power outages. No word yet on whether it will air on WHUS and/or All-Access.

Women's Soccer: The women's soccer team heads on the road for the first time this year. Tomorrow, they will face Wake Forest in Winston-Salem at 6:00 PM and on Sunday, they will face Virginia Tech in Winston-Salem at 11:30 AM. The former will be available on Wake Forest's website, and both will be on WHUS 91.7 FM and WHUS.org (although the audio on the Demon Deacon's site will be theirs). UConn is 1-1 so far this season.

Women's Volleyball: Toyota UConn Classic starts tomorrow night. Binghamton vs. Howard at 5:00, then the Huskies take on Holy Cross at 7:30. On Saturday, each team plays two games. The Bearcats face the Crusaders at 10:00 AM, followed by the Huskies taking on Howard at 12:30. Then at 5:00, it's Howard-Holy Cross, followed by UConn-Binghamton at 7:30 to close it out.

Men's and Women's Basketball: Both teams released their full schedules yesterday. The women's basketball game on Martin Luther King Day will be at Gampel, so I can attend that one when I (finally) return to campus. Also my first week back, the men host Cincinnati at 7:00 at Gampel. Top 10 Games of 2010-11 #2: Women's Basketball vs. Baylor, November 16, 2010

This is game #2 on the list of Top 10 games I attended in 2010-11. It should have been posted yesterday but I was out of town for a wedding. So here it is. Expect game #1 to be posted next Monday as usual.

What: Women's Basketball vs. Baylor

When: Tuesday, November 16, 2011, 6:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: UConn 65 Baylor 64

This was my first game at XL Center, as my first few basketball games were all at Gampel. It was also the third women's basketball game I attended, and the second regular season one. The first two were both blowouts, but I knew better than to expect the same here.

Due to an overloaded and late-departing bus as well as rush hour traffic, I only arrived in the arena about 15 minutes before the game started, and had difficulty finding the student section. And then I couldn't see about half the court over the people in front of me and had to watch the game on the jumbotron.

But this was still an exciting game. Unfortunately, I neglected to make a post about it for some reason, though I did find it as #3 in the Top 10 games of Fall 2010 . This game was on the 24 hours of basketball marathon, one of ESPN's more interesting ideas. I'm just glad we weren't playing at 6 AM like Monmouth, although if it were at Gampel at that time I might have gone. Then again, probably not because I had 8 AM class on Tuesdays. Although the building was right next to the arena, but I doubt they'd let me bring my backback well whatever.

Back to the game. It was exciting throughout, with Baylor choosing not to foul at the end and ultimately getting the ball back down only by one but with only a few tenths of a second left. It didn't work, and we won 65-64. Very exciting game although it was the closest we've come to losing on our home court in quite some time.

Softball Update (+ Other Schedule Updates)

UConnHuskies.com is reporting that the Softball game scheduled for tomorrow at 3:30 PM has been moved to Thursday at the same time. Since there will be NCAA Basketball games abound at that time, I will not be attending the softball game. I also will almost certainly not be attending Women's Lacrosse Saturday vs. Rutgers due to March Madness.

As for Women's Basketball Sunday afternoon at Gampel, it is now apparent that we will have the noon game with Kansas State-Purdue at 2:30. I will almost certainly not be staying for the late game, but we will see. I will post my schedule for next week shortly.

February 28th, 2011 (Game 59): Women's Basketball vs. Syracuse

What: Women's Basketball vs. Syracuse

Where: Gampel Pavillion

When: Monday, February 28, 2011, 7:30 PM

Result: Win, 82-47

This was an amazing night. Maya Moore's last regular season game in her career, and what a night it was to honor her. Aside from the fact that it took the PA Announcer a full three minutes to read off her accomplishments and awards, the Huskies dominated this game like they have so many others over her career. In fact, nobody currently in the Big East has beaten the Huskies. That's amazing.

Here's a question... Why do the Syracuse Orange wear blue? The men's basketball wears orange, but the football and women's basketball wear navy blue. Shouldn't they be called the Syracuse Navy then? Or the Syracuse Dark Blue? It just makes no sense. Then again, why do the UConn Huskies wear blue? Have you ever seen a blue husky? Or a purple one for that matter, like U Washington wears? But at least Husky isn't a color. Orange, by definition, is orange. You could paint a Husky blue, I suppose. But you can't paint Orange blue, or it's blue now. Ridiculous.

Anyway, Maya scored 22 points in the first half but didn't play much in the second half. It's a shame, too. She could have absolutely dominated this contest. And what a way that would have been to go out. But we've still (hopefully) got three Big East Tournament games in Hartford, and (almost) certainly two NCAA Tournament games at Gampel. On a side note, I did purchase student tickets for the first two NCAA rounds, so I will be attending those games. Whether I attend the other game on the first day (Sunday) remains to be seen, depending on which one is first and who is playing. Stay tuned.

Saturday is Men's Basketball Senior Day, and after that I go on Spring Break, and will return to campus on Selection Sunday. I will post a schedule for the week after break sometime soon, probably during break. Until then, stay tuned!

Last Night's game

Due to personal issues, I was unable to make it to last night's Women's Basketball game against Seton Hall. I will still be at the remainder of games this week, including Men's BB  vs. Marquette tomorrow, Women's Lacrosse and Men's Ice Hockey games Friday, and Women's Ice Hockey Saturday.

February 19, 2011 (Game 53): Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

What: Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

When: February 19, 2011, 2:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavilion

Result: Win 78-57

While many would have expected this to be close, it turned into a blowout. We got up big early, and ran away with it. Around the middle of the second half, they announced Baylor had lost, and the crowd started cheering. We will be the new #1 when the polls come out. This was a pretty big win for us because now we've almost certainly won the Conference. This is a pretty good accomplishment.

As for the game itself, Notre Dame wore interesting uniforms. Apparently their women's team wears different unis than the men. They had names below the numbers instead of above. Strange.

February 14, 2011 (Game 51): Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma

What: Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma

When: Monday February 14, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Win 86-45

Valentine's Day. And I don't have a girlfriend. So what do I do? I go to a Women's Basketball game vs. Oklahoma at XL Center. But I can't escape the Pink Craze because it's Pink Zone Night. And while our uniforms only have pink trim, Oklahoma's are Pink with red numbers making them look eerily like Pippi Longstocking. But I digress. The game was great. We got off to a lighting fast start (what else is new? Duke? Remember them?) and quickly blew the Sooners out of the water.

Of course, Ben Roethlisberger's sister Carlee was on the Oklahoma team, thus leading to chants of "Let's Go Packers!". Amusing and somewhat original. I like it. We should play siblings of star NFL Quarterbacks more often.

At the Under 4:00 Media Timeout of the second half, they had a Kiss Cam up on the scoreboard in honor of Valentine's Day. While the scoreboard mainly showed old people (some of whom weren't even kissing) Jonathan the Husky started doing a kissing dance with himself, at which point I ran up to him to make it look like I was going to kiss him (I wouldn't have). He then ran away pretending to scream and cry. Amusing. And hillarious. I actually made the security guard laugh. Sweet.

Anyway, our next game is men's basketball tomorrow night against Georgetown, followed by Women against Notre Dame on Saturday. We then have men's hockey Saturday night and the Women's Hockey Sunday afternoon (I have confirmed that Frietas is reopen). Go Huskies!

Saturday, February 5: Women's Basketball vs. DePaul

What: Women's Basketball vs. DePaul

When: Saturday, February 5, 2:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavillion

Result: Win, 89-66

Summary:

So today, there was some Gamers' Convention at the Student Union. Which meant that when I ate lunch there before the game, there were a bunch of guys in crazy costumes. One was wearing a wedding dress (this was a guy). So as someone put it, these families with little kids are going to stop by the Union before or after the game, see these creepy costumes, and be traumatized for life. And they'll never want to come back to another game.

Anyway, this was a pretty good game. There was talk of DePaul pulling an upset, and early on it looked like it. But then we went on a run, as we tend to do, and began to pull away. We were up 45-32 at the half, and just continued to pour it on once the second half started. A good game for sure, and now we are in sole possession of first place in the Big East. Notre Dame and DePaul are tied for second at 8-1, while we are 10-0.

As a result of the blowout, we got to see reserves Lauren Engeln and Michala Johnson for an extended period of time. Engeln got a basket, which is rare for her, but despite the crowd's best efforts, Michala couldn't score, and barely even touched the ball. She did get two free throws but missed them both. Oh well. She'll get her chance soon enough, I'm sure.

For now, though, we've got a fairly long break before the next game. Hockey Fest is next Sunday, and after that it's a busy week, but for the next seven days, we've got nothing.

January 31, 2011: Women's Basketball vs. Duke

What: Women's Basketball vs. Duke

When: January 31, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavilion

Result: Win, 87-51

Summary:

As I write this, I am snowed in yet again. Fourth day this semester school has closed due to the weather. Completely ridiculous. Anyway, as for the game, it was much more of a blowout than I would have expected. Huskies jumped out to a 13-0 lead before going up 23-2. And with that, the game was pretty much over. Duke was somewhat competitive for the rest of the game, but the deficit was too much.

On a side note, I almost caught a flying T-Shirt but it went right through my hands and down to the row below. And it was a pretty lobby toss so I should have had it. I'll never be a kick returner in the NFL. Oh well. It was a great game.

There is a semi-serious discussion going on at the UConn Fan Board about the Student Section chanting "Overrated" at Duke with us up by nearly 30 with 6 minutes to go in the first half. Some members describe it as "unsportsmanlike" and "offensive". This is ridiculous. The student section chants things that are a lot worse over the course of the game. While I'll grant that "overrated" is probably the most overused chant in college hoops, I really wouldn't consider it unsportsmanlike. Dumb, pointless perhaps, but not offensive or anything.

The next game I'll be at is the Men's Basketball game vs. Syracuse tomorrow night, but if it snows again (which it will) I don't know if the Roadshow will be on. Of course, the Orange may not be able to make it down here, in which case we'll see. The Connecticut Whale play Friday night at XL Center, so we'll see if they want a basketball game there Thursday night (if it's postponed). If not, I don't know what will happen. Play it at Gampel, perhaps? Too early to speculate.

About the Basketball Games

I had written up a summary for the men's and women's basketball games I attended last Saturday, but for some reason when I hit "Publish" Wordpress didn't post it and now it's lost. I'm trying to recover it, but if not, they may be lost. I may rewrite it, I may not. It took me a while. We'll see.

Fall 2010 Semester Countdown #3: Women's Basketball Defeats #2 Baylor 65-64

Here is game #3 in our Top 5 Games of Fall 2010 Semester Countdown. On November 16 at XL Center, the #1 UConn Huskies women's basketball team faced off against the #2 Baylor Lady Bears, led by the manly Brittney Greiner. Down by one, 65-64, Baylor chose not to foul and instead forced the Huskies into a shot-clock violation. Unfortunately, there were only about 1.5 seconds left when they got the ball, and a desperate heave failed.

This #1-#2 matchup was by far the tightest the Huskies were played during what would eventually become a 90-game winning streak. But thanks to 30 points by Maya Moore, the Huskies were able to pull this one off. And surprisingly, Greiner only managed seven rebounds. This was my first game ever at the XL Center, plus it was on National TV (ESPN2) as part of the 24 Hours of Basketball Marathon. All in all, a great game.
