Game 2-12-80: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Bentley

I'm going to keep these four reviews short because I'm  busy with midterms. I'll have more content in reviews soon. I promise.


What: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Bentley

Result: Loss, 2-1, OT

Wow. This was a bad weekend for UConn sports. Really bad. After a bad series with Sacred Heart last weekend, it looked like we would bounce back vs. the Falcons. Billy Latta got an early goal, and we jumped out 1-0. But alas, it was not to be. Bentley got a goal in the second to make it 1-1. Not fun for us.

And then came overtime. The Falcons got a game winning goal, and our collapse continued. We got 1 point in two games vs. lowly Sacred Heart, then failed to get any vs. Bentley in a home and home. The "dream season" may be just a dream.

As for the Falcons' uniforms, they were hideous. Black uniforms, with a black "B", and black numbers with white trim. I wish I had a picture, but I don't. But they were hideous. Just black. Why?

Anyway, this was just the start of a very bad weekend for the Huskies. Read the rest of my posts in just a few minutes.

Game 2-4-72: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Robert Morris

Well, this was one ugly game, to say the least.  It started with the public address announcer referring to the visitors as the "Robert Morris Colonels" - and pronouncing "Colonels" as it is spelled. Strike one. . Attendance was paltry compared to the packed student crowd we had last night. Strike two. And there was a lot of nasty stuff going on on the ice as well. . Jordan Sims received a game misconduct in the first period. Strike three against the Huskies, perhaps. That didn't end it though. Marcello Ranallo scored a goal in the second period to put us up 1-0. After the pitiful outing on Friday, it looked like we might win one here. Not so fast.

Robert Morris scored a goal in the second and a goal in the third and went up 2-1. They would win by that score. But they did get one of their players tossed for unsportsmanlike conduct. The refs were calling a lot of penalties, and it was just one nasty game.

Anyway, the Huskies have been playing pretty poorly since I've been here. Three straight UConn games I've attended have ended in losses. That's never happened to me before. I don't think that's going to change this afternoon with our women's ice hockey game vs. Boston College. But it would be nice if it did.

Game 2-3-71: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Robert Morris

Result: Loss, 4-3

Well, I must admit I'm a bit embarrassed by this one. We were down 4-1 a few minutes into the third period, and thinking we had no chance, I left. Well, we came storming back and made it 4-3. If we won, I'd be even more embarrassed, but we didn't.

But as for what I did see.... This was my first hockey game of the year, and also a Blue Line meeting. For those who don't know, the Blue Line is the UConn ice hockey student fan club. Well, they were giving away free t-shirts at this one, and as you can see, they look a lot like last year's.

Well, after eating free pizza for half an hour, I got into my seat to watch the game. Puck drop was at 7:05. And it looked close for a while until Robert Morris got a goal to make it 1-0. It went to the end of the first period that way. In the second period, Robert Morris went up 4-0 and it seemed all but over. But for the time being, I remained in my seat and it worked out. A puck flew into the stands and lodged right on the seat in front of me. I reached over and picked it up off the empty bench. After verifying that it was ok, I picked it up and pocketed it. My lucky day, I guess. Well, it really wasn't.

Jordan Sims got a goal to make it 4-1 going into the break, but it didn't look like it would be enough. Then I left, thinking we had all but lost. But when I got back to my dorm, I found we had lost 4-3, and almost sent the game to overtime. The moral of the story? Never leave a game early. I'll start with that tonight. 7:05 vs. Robert Morris again. We are now tied with Niagara for fifth in the AHA standings. The Purple Eagles play American International and should win again tonight. So we need to win. Go Huskies!

UConn Sports Roundup, November 16th

I've been a bit busy lately, but I'll try to update this more regularly.

Men's Soccer: By now you've probably heard it, but the men's soccer team made it to the Big East Final before losing 1-0 in OT to St. John's. They will face the winner of Monmouth and Stony Brook in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 1:00 PM. That game is free on uconnhuskies.com. It will also be on WHUS.

Men's Ice Hockey: Gets underway at 7:05 PM tonight from Freitas against Sacred Heart. The Huskies will look to get back to winning ways after a tough weekend. That game will be live on WHUS as well.

Women's Hockey: Continues to struggle, having been shut out three straight games and has one win this whole season. They need to turn it around quickly. They will face Boston University on the road this Saturday at 3:00 before hosting Vermont Sunday at 2:00.

Football: The Huskies are 4-5 and need to win two of three to get a bowl bid. They will host Louisville and Rutgers before heading to Cincinnati. All games will be at noon on Saturdays, with the Louisville one being on SNY/Big East Regional Network. We may get a bowl bid, but we don't deserve one. In any case, hopefully Scott McCummings gets more action this weekend after his comeback vs. Syracuse.

Men's Basketball: The Huskies are 2-0 after wins over Columbia and Wagner and will head to XL Center for the first time tomorrow when they host Maine at 7:00 on SNY. They should win that game, but the Wagner game was closer than it should have been, so you never know.

Women's Basketball: The  #4 Huskies routed Pacific last night, 112-53. Those are the Huskies we're used to, blowing teams out. Kareena Mosqueda-Lewis led the way with 25 points, while Bria Hartley added 18. Kelly Farris had six steals. Next up is #5 Stanford on Monday at 7:30 on ESPNU. Big game for the Huskies at home.

Field Hockey: The #4 seeded Huskies will face the #1 overall seed UNC in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament at Trager Stadium in Louisville. That game will be at 2:00 PM Friday and video can be seen here at that time. In the later game, unseeded powerhouse Maryland faces Old Dominion, with the winner facing the Huskies or Tarheels on November 20th (Sunday) at Noon for the championship.

Women's Cross Country: UConn's team is nationally ranked for the first time in program history. The USTFCCCA announced yesterday that the Huskies were ranked 28th in the nation. This comes following a 2nd place finish at Penn State Nationals. A press release on the UConn website can be found here and quotes coach Andrea Grove-McDonough as saying "I am so happy for the team and for what this will mean to them. These women have worked so hard this summer. Right from the start when we talked about bringing Connecticut to the NCAA Championships in Cross Country.... This team ... believed that it was possible, and set about quietly making it happen. They should all be very proud of themselves," We haven't reached the championships yet, but we're well on our well.

Field Hockey: For the eighth straight week, the Huskies are ranked #4 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Top 3 of Old Dominion, UNC, and Maryland also remained the same. Notably, however, Duke leapfrogged Syracuse to #5, relegating the Orange to #6. The Orange and Huskies will square off on Sunday at noon for the Big East regular season championship. But first, the Huskies host Boston University tonight at 7:00. That game can be seen on Huskies All-Access.

Men's Soccer: So much for the undefeated season. UConn was dealt their first loss yesterday, 2-0  at West Virginia. The Huskies fall to 13-1-1, and are 4-1-1 in Big East play. Fortunately, they will still be in second place in the Blue Division heading into the weekend, but will host Georgetown on Saturday at 7:30 PM in a crucial contest. That is Senior Night and will be on WHUS and All-Access. The Huskies will then host Marquette a week from today which could decide the Blue Division Champion.

Men's Ice Hockey: Marcello Ranallo scored the game-winning goal in OT and the Huskies defeated UMass-Lowell, 3-2. UConn improves to 2-1-1 on the year. Miles Winter and Brant Harris also scored for the Huskies. This was an impressive victory because the Riverhawks were heavy favorites heading in. Hopefully this is a sign of a good seasonf or us. UConn's next game is on the road at Merrimack on Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Huskies then return home October 27th for a rare Thursday night game vs. Atlantic Hockey rival Holy Cross.

Men's Soccer: The 13-0-1 and #1 ranked men's soccer team will head to Morgantown tonight to face #23 West Virginia. Kick-off is 7:00 PM. The Mountaineers are tied for third in the Big East Blue Division, and are 3-2-0 in Big East play (7-5-1 overall). that game will be on WHUS and is also available via the WVU website here. After they face the Mountaineers, the Huskies will host Georgetown and Marquette, before heading to Seton Hall to wrap up the season.


Men's Ice Hockey: The 1-1-1 Huskies will head to Nashua, New Hampshire tonight, where they will take on the UMass-Lowell Riverhawks at 7:00 PM. The Riverhaws are 2-0, thanks to two wins over Minnesota State. The Huskies, meanwhile, are fresh off a 5-0 shutout of Army. Garrett Bartus earned Atlantic Hockey Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance in this contest, in which he made 47 saves.  The Huskies' next game following that is on Saturday at Merrimack. Puck drops at 7:00 PM.

Women's Lacrosse: The 2012 Schedule was officially released today. You can view it here. I already posted on the schedule when games appeared on Super scoreboard. The original post is here. However, coach Katie Woods has also added a game at Binghamton on Saturday, March 3rd at 12:00 PM. Opening Day is February 18th vs. Iona at 1:00 PM. The Huskies will host Big East runner-up Notre Dame on April 14th at noon, although I don't know where that game is being played because the "Dog Fight" track meet is also at Sherman on the same day, All Day. Stay tuned for more information on this when it becomes available.

Women's Volleyball: Mattison Quayle was named Big East Player of the Week thanks to her great week. She had two games, and recorded 20 kills in each game. The Huskies went 2-0 over that stretch.

Men's and Women's Tennis: Both teams will be at a meet at Quinnipiac today, starting at 2:00 PM. The men's team is 2-0 in head-to-head meets, having beaten Hartford and Siena. The women's team, meanwhile is 0-1 thanks to a loss to UMass.
