February 26 (Game 58): Women's Ice Hockey vs. Northeastern (Hockey East Tournament)

What: Women's Ice Hockey vs. Northeastern (Hockey East Tournament)

When: February 26, 1:00 PM

Where: Mark Edward Frietas Ice Forum

Result: Loss 4-0

For what was supposedly a good hockey team, this was certainly a disappointment. We were the 4 seed in Hockey East, and thought we had a good chance to win and move on to the semifinals. But we were too far ahead of ourselves. We gave up a goal just seconds into Period 2, and eventually fell apart giving up three more in quick succession and lost 4-0. That being said, this was an interesting game. Unlike when we hosted the Big East Field Hockey Tournament, this had all the functions of a home game. A T-Shirt Toss, the Chuck a Puck, and all that other stuff. The only difference is, there was an admission fee. As a student, I got in free, but all other fans didn't. Which is why attendance was so meager. Oh well, time to look forward to next season. We've got spring sports starting soon, which should be fun. And basketball season is winding down. So long for now.

February 25 (Game 57): Men's Ice Hockey vs. American International

What: Men's Ice Hockey vs. American International

When: Friday, February 25th, 2011, 7:05 PM

Where: Mark Edward Frietas Ice Forum

Result: Win 2-1

Senior Night at Men's Ice Hockey. And the first period was very sloppy. Probably about four minutes of it was at full strength. Funny how last year, we and AIC were the two worst NCAA Hockey teams, and now we've got a bye into the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals. Of course, that's because the tournament structure is weird, but who cares? Anyway, this was a pretty good senior farewell. We led 2-0, and while AIC did score one to ruin the shutout, we still sent our seniors out with a win. Chances are we'll lose in the AHA tournament, but it's still better than last season. This team is on the rise. We could be great soon.

February 24 (Game 56): Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

What: Men's Basketball vs. Marquette

When: Thursday, February 24, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Loss, 74-67 (OT)

This was very disappointing, to say the least. We were leading for most of the game, before falling apart late. Marquette managed to tie the game in the final seconds and send it to Overtime, but we simply had nothing left. Awful game. Fortunately, we beat Cincinnati today, so we might get one bye in the Big East Tournament. This is a tough conference this year. And if we play like this in the NCAA Tournament, we're going to lose. So hopefully we don't. I'll be at one more men's game this year, next Saturday, Senior Day, against Notre Dame. We also are at West Virginia in a couple days. So it's a big stretch for us.

Some Blog news

here is some blog update

  • A review for the Marquette game should be posted some time over the weekend, along with ones for the AIC Men's and Northeastern women's hockey games.

  • I did not attend the Lacrosse game vs. Binghamton today due to the horrible weather. Of course, as soon as I got back to my dorm it stopped raining, but oh well. There's next game, even though due to spring break and weeks that won't be for almost a month.

  • Next week's weekly schedule will be posted soon. I will be on Spring Break Sunday March 6-Saturday March 12 and will miss home games in that time, although there are only a few.

Last Night's game

Due to personal issues, I was unable to make it to last night's Women's Basketball game against Seton Hall. I will still be at the remainder of games this week, including Men's BB  vs. Marquette tomorrow, Women's Lacrosse and Men's Ice Hockey games Friday, and Women's Ice Hockey Saturday.

February 20, 2011 (Game 55): Women's Ice Hockey vs. Northeastern

What: Women's Ice Hockey vs. Northeastern

When: February 20, 2011, 1:00 PM

Where: Mark Edward Frietas Ice Forum

Result: Tie 1-1

This was not nearly as high-scoring or exciting as the Men's Game the night before. But being Senior Day, it was still pretty fun. The UConn lineup was introduced by nicknames, for instance "CHASE" although some I didn't understand. If anyone could provide insight on this, it would be great. Leave it in the comments.

Of course, there's no admission fee for Women's Hockey, unlike for the men (although students still typically get in free for the latter) which makes it all the nicer. And there are fewer people, which makes it quieter yet fun somehow. Attendance was listed at 258, or roughly a third to a quarter of what the men typically attract.

As for the game itself, it was interesting. We got a goal in the first period, the visiting Huskies got a goal in the second, and it was scoreless for the rest of the game including overtime. But Alexandra Garcia, our goalie, made 43 saves. Amazing. Pretty good game. And we'll face them again in a Hockey East quarterfinal next Saturday.

February 19, 2011 (Game 54): Men's Ice Hockey vs. Bentley

What: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Bentley

When: February 19, 2011, 7:05 PM

Where: Mark Edward Frietas Ice Forum

Result: Win 6-4

This was the second-to-last Men's Ice Hockey game of the regular season. And it was also the highest-scoring one I had seen. After just a single period, we led 3-2. We then scored two second period goals in a span of eight seconds to go up 5-2. Bentley came back to make it 5-4, but we scored an empty-net goal from Jordan Sims as time expired to win 6-4. This was a pretty good game, as admission for students was free. Next week is Senior Night, which should be fun, and like every game I've been to, students get in free. And there's free pizza. Fun!

February 19, 2011 (Game 53): Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

What: Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame

When: February 19, 2011, 2:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavilion

Result: Win 78-57

While many would have expected this to be close, it turned into a blowout. We got up big early, and ran away with it. Around the middle of the second half, they announced Baylor had lost, and the crowd started cheering. We will be the new #1 when the polls come out. This was a pretty big win for us because now we've almost certainly won the Conference. This is a pretty good accomplishment.

As for the game itself, Notre Dame wore interesting uniforms. Apparently their women's team wears different unis than the men. They had names below the numbers instead of above. Strange.

February 16, 2011 (Game 52): Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown

What: Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown

When: Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Win 78-70

This was a pretty back-and-forth game. Georgetown got off to an early lead really frustrating fans, but UConn came back. The key turning point was Kemba Walker shooting it off the backboard then grabbing the rebound and laying it in. Amazing play.

That being said, nothing too exciting happened this game. The action was somewhat back-and-forth but really no good plays other than the Kemba one. And nothing interesting happened in the crowd other than the obvious question of What's a Hoya? But no really amusing stuff. In any case, we're back for Women's Basketball and Men's Ice Hockey tomorrow, and then Women's Ice Hockey on Sunday.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

February 14, 2011 (Game 51): Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma

What: Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma

When: Monday February 14, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Win 86-45

Valentine's Day. And I don't have a girlfriend. So what do I do? I go to a Women's Basketball game vs. Oklahoma at XL Center. But I can't escape the Pink Craze because it's Pink Zone Night. And while our uniforms only have pink trim, Oklahoma's are Pink with red numbers making them look eerily like Pippi Longstocking. But I digress. The game was great. We got off to a lighting fast start (what else is new? Duke? Remember them?) and quickly blew the Sooners out of the water.

Of course, Ben Roethlisberger's sister Carlee was on the Oklahoma team, thus leading to chants of "Let's Go Packers!". Amusing and somewhat original. I like it. We should play siblings of star NFL Quarterbacks more often.

At the Under 4:00 Media Timeout of the second half, they had a Kiss Cam up on the scoreboard in honor of Valentine's Day. While the scoreboard mainly showed old people (some of whom weren't even kissing) Jonathan the Husky started doing a kissing dance with himself, at which point I ran up to him to make it look like I was going to kiss him (I wouldn't have). He then ran away pretending to scream and cry. Amusing. And hillarious. I actually made the security guard laugh. Sweet.

Anyway, our next game is men's basketball tomorrow night against Georgetown, followed by Women against Notre Dame on Saturday. We then have men's hockey Saturday night and the Women's Hockey Sunday afternoon (I have confirmed that Frietas is reopen). Go Huskies!

February 13 (Game 50): Men's Basketball vs. Providence

What: Men's Basketball vs. Providence

When: Sunday, February 13, 7:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavillion

Result: Win 75-57

I arrived at this game only an hour before tip or so due to a delayed return from the Hockey Fest. This meant that I was sitting a bit higher up then I wanted, but still in the lower level. This started out looking like we were going to play horribly. The fans were getting restless and booing, but thankfully Providence wasn't making shots either. We went on a mini run to close the half and led 33-30. We then woudn up tied 39-39 but then Combs-McDaniel went on an amazing point rampage and led us to a 75-57 victory. I unfortunately left with a few minutes to go because I wasn't feeling well (although I felt fine an hour later - strange) but I saw most of the game. It was the second game I was at in the same day, which meant some of my energy was zapped, but it was still pretty good. Next up is Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma tonight, and we've got a pretty busy week with three basketball games and two hockey games. Should be fun.

February 13 (Game 49): Men's Ice Hockey vs. Sacred Heart (Hockey Fest)

What: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Sacred Heart (Whalers Hockey Fest)

When: Sunday, February 13, 1:00 PM

Where: Rentschler Field

Result: Win 3-1

This was just a magnificent afternoon. First of all, I wound up sitting in seats about three rows back from center ice. They probably would have cost me about $800 at a football game. And I got cupholders. Nice. But as for the game itself, it was amazing. There's something pristine and picturesque about outdoor hockey. It's kind of hard to describe. But despite the freezing cold, seeing these two teams skate back and forth on the outdoor rink was just amazing to watch.

We scored a goal right at the end of the first period to go up 1-0. The Pioneers equalized about midway through the second, but we retook the lead just a few seconds later. We would score a third goal to go up 3-1, and Cole Schneider almost got his third goal on an empty net late but he didn't, to much disappointment. It was still amazing though. But what I'm wondering is why Sacred Heart brought their mascot and we didn't bring Jonathan. Prepping for the basketball game perhaps?

On a bad note, the bus back to campus wasn't where it was supposed to be and I wound up missing it and riding back with the band after the first period of the women's game (still no write-up on that though). Which also meant I didn't get to the men's basketball game until around 6:00 at which point I had poor seats. But more on that in that article.

Whoops! Our Header Had a Typo!

Thanks to Boneyard Member Wonkster, we have identified and fixed a typo in our header which was apparently there for several months. What should have read "GREGORY UCONN CHRONICLES" instead read "GREGORY UCONN CHROINCLES". Well now that's fixed. Thank you Wonkster.

And apparently he messaged me about it on February 4th, but I never bothered to open the message, even though it should have told me it was there in my Inbox. Strange. Although actually, I don't remember it telling me before that I had messages in my Inbox on BY so I don't know.

Blog News: Game Log Added

I have just added a page to the Blog with a list of every UConn game I have attended.  You can view it at http://greguconngames.wordpress.com/the-log/ or by clicking "The Game Log" on the top menu. Some notes:

  • Any UConn game I attended is included, as is any game that I attended as part of a doubleheader involving UConn (such as tournament games, or the Women's Basketball Worldvision Challenge earlier this season). However, if UConn wasn't playing it's not included in the game count (you'll see what I mean when you go there)

  • I have attended 48 games so far. That means the Whalers Hockey Fest today will be game 49, and the Providence Men's Basketball game will be game 50 (although I may or may not wind up going to that one - we'll see how I feel after the Hockey Fest.)

  • It also lists UConn's record up to and including each game. Right now, UConn is 37-7-4 in games I've attended.

  • I also listed the longest streaks (in games I was at, of course). As a note, I could not decide whether to use Unbeaten Streak or winning streak, because in some sports a tie is a real possibility while in others it's nonexistent (or highly unlikely). So, I included both. Come spring, with just lacrosse, baseball, and softball, none of which have ties, I'm guessing that these two will be the same. And the longest winning streak (11 games) included only basketball games, in which there could not conceivably have even been a tie. Meanwhile the longest unbeaten streak (14 games) included three ties and no win streak longer than five games. So choose which one you like best.

  • Some of the games have posts here and others don't. I will try to add the links to the older games that are already listed at some point, and in the future, as I make each post I will post the link to the entry in the log.

P=Probably Attending

M=Might Attend

D=Doubtful to Attend

Monday, February 14th:

7:00 PM: Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma (Y)

Wednesday, February 16th:

7:00 PM: Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown (Y)

Saturday, February 19th:

2:00 PM: Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame (Y)

Update for Sunday's Games

Unfortunately, due to lack of interest, the SUBOG bus for the Women's Ice Hockey game at Rentschler has been canceled. In fact, I was the only one to buy a ticket. So, I will not be attending that game, only the men's one. This also means that I will be attending the Men's Basketball game at 7:00 PM vs. Providence. So, now the schedule for Sunday looks like this:

1 PM: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Sacred Heart @ Rentschler

7 PM: Men's Basketball vs. Providence

Also, I will repost my schedule for next week in a few minutes, as that is down a few posts below along with this week's games.

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Saturday, February 5: Women's Basketball vs. DePaul

What: Women's Basketball vs. DePaul

When: Saturday, February 5, 2:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavillion

Result: Win, 89-66

Summary:

So today, there was some Gamers' Convention at the Student Union. Which meant that when I ate lunch there before the game, there were a bunch of guys in crazy costumes. One was wearing a wedding dress (this was a guy). So as someone put it, these families with little kids are going to stop by the Union before or after the game, see these creepy costumes, and be traumatized for life. And they'll never want to come back to another game.

Anyway, this was a pretty good game. There was talk of DePaul pulling an upset, and early on it looked like it. But then we went on a run, as we tend to do, and began to pull away. We were up 45-32 at the half, and just continued to pour it on once the second half started. A good game for sure, and now we are in sole possession of first place in the Big East. Notre Dame and DePaul are tied for second at 8-1, while we are 10-0.

As a result of the blowout, we got to see reserves Lauren Engeln and Michala Johnson for an extended period of time. Engeln got a basket, which is rare for her, but despite the crowd's best efforts, Michala couldn't score, and barely even touched the ball. She did get two free throws but missed them both. Oh well. She'll get her chance soon enough, I'm sure.

For now, though, we've got a fairly long break before the next game. Hockey Fest is next Sunday, and after that it's a busy week, but for the next seven days, we've got nothing.

Schedule for February 7th-20th

Since next week is a slow week in terms of events, I am posting my schedule through Sunday, February 20. As usual, the  key is:

Y=Will Attend

P=Probably Attending

M=Might Attend

D=Doubtful to Attend

Sunday, February 13th:

1:00 PM: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Sacred Heart @ Rentschler Field (Y)

4:00 PM: Women's Ice Hockey vs. Providence @Rentschler Field (Y)

7:00 PM: Men's Basketball vs. Providence (D)

Note: As of now, I do not plan on going to Men's Basketball after HockeyFest. However, knowing this winter season, there is always the chance of snow postponing the hockey games. I have already sold my Basketball ticket, but I might be able to figure something out if Hockey gets snowed out. But that does not appear to be the case. But it is still a possibility.

Monday, February 14th:

7:00 PM: Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma (Y)

Wednesday, February 16th:

7:00 PM: Men's Basketball vs. Georgetown (Y)

Saturday, February 19th:

2:00 PM: Women's Basketball vs. Notre Dame (Y)

7:00 PM: Men's Ice Hockey vs. Bentley (P) Assuming Freitas Reopnes

Sunday, February 20th:

1:00 PM: Women's Ice Hockey vs. Northeastern (Y) Assuming Freitas Reopens

Letter to the Editor in Hartford Courant

So today, a Letter to the Editor I submitted to the Hartford Courant was published. I wrote in to comment on the hysteria regarding Robert Burton and the $3 million donation to UConn football. The online version is available here.

Or just look below.
The front-page article "Does Big Donation Buy Big Access?" [Jan. 30] was well written. However, it misses a few important points.

College athletic departments are not corporations, and the donors are not shareholders. They are just donors. That does not entitle them to any special rights or privileges, any more than someone who donated a large sum of money to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's campaign would now have influence in state government.

It is ridiculous the special status that college athletics are given in this country. If Mr. Burton wants to move his donation from the football team to the school of business, that is certainly his choice. But it is unfair and childish for him to go on a raging rant about how he deserves to be consulted about who to hire and how, and because he wasn't, it is a great insult. He just needs to grow up and face the fact that he isn't the center of everything.

Update on Men's Ice Hockey vs. Army (UPDATED AGAIN FOR WOMEN'S)

I have just been informed that the Men's Ice Hockey game vs. Army for Saturday night will be played at XL Center. It appears unlikely I will be able to attend as it is too late to arrange for buses. So for now, it looks like I'll just be at the Women's basketball game vs. DePaul tomorrow afternoon, and *hopefully* Women's Ice Hockey Sunday vs. Northeastern. We'll see. Stay tuned.

Update: The women's game on Sunday will also be moved to XL and played at 11:00 AM. As of now, I have no way of getting there, so it looks like the only game I'll be at this weekend is Women's basketball vs. DePaul tomorrow afternoon.

Thursday, February 3, 2011

Update on Saturday Ice Hockey

I have been informed that the Men's Ice Hockey game vs. Army wil be played either at Freitas or XL Center, and we should know for sure by tomorrow. However, transportation will not be provided if it is in Hartford as it is too last-minute to arrange buses. Watch for updates.

Note: The status of the Women's game Sunday is still unclear. The CT Whale play at XL so if Freitas is still shut down, I don't know what will happen.

Wednesday, February 2, 2011: Men's Basketball vs. Syracuse

What: Men's Basketball vs. Syracuse

When: Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: XL Center

Result: Loss 66-58

Well, this game was a disaster to say the least. After the hideous loss to Louisville, we needed a win. And in the first half we struggled to make shots. Somehow, we only trailed by one at halftime, 26-25, largely because the Orange had about six airballs. Terrible first half of basketball. At one point we lead by 9, 23-14, before Syracuse finally started knocking down shots.

Then the Orange got off to a run to start the second half. We really struggled throughout, and frankly did not deserve to win. The only thing uglier than the weather outside the arena was our play inside. That's how bad we were. And the crowd was not happy at all. Very poor showing by the Huskies. Oh well. There's always next game. We're 5-4 in the Big East and will need to play almost flawlessly from here on out to get a good seed in the tournament. Hopefully we can do that. But we'll see. What really matters is March Madness, which is a month and a half away.

For now, that's it. We may be back over the weekend with Men's and Women's Hockey.  but as you know, that's still up in the air.

Update on Ice Hockey

So Freitas is temporarily closed. And we are supposed to play Army there Saturday night. I have just been informed that administrators are working on plans for an alternative, and we will probably not play on-campus Saturday. (Thanks to Philip Dwire from Blue Line). Once I hear what happens, I'll figure out what I'm going to do and post an update. For now though, it's up in the air whether I'll be attending that game and the Women's game vs. Northeastern on Sunday.

Freitas Closed Temporarily: What Comes Next

I just received a mass email saying that the Freitas Ice Forum has been temporarily closed due to snow accumulation on the roof.
This afternoon, it was decided that due to visible snow retention on its roof, the Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs campus will be closed until further assessment can be made. Events scheduled to occur in the rink will be postponed to a later date.  Further updates will be shared as they become available.

Currently, I am planning to attend the Men's Ice Hockey game vs. Army on Saturday night and the Women's Ice Hockey game vs. Northeastern on Sunday afternoon. But now that remains in question. While it's hard to speculate, we play away at Army the night before we host them, but after that don't face them the remainder of the year. So it's possible that the Saturday game will be played at West Point, perhaps with us being designated the "home" team. As for the women, we play at Northeastern on February 19th before hosting them on the 20th. It's possible (again, I don't know) that they'll switch those two around, playing in Boston on Sunday and at home on the 19th. We'll see.

January 31, 2011: Women's Basketball vs. Duke

What: Women's Basketball vs. Duke

When: January 31, 2011, 7:00 PM

Where: Gampel Pavilion

Result: Win, 87-51

Summary:

As I write this, I am snowed in yet again. Fourth day this semester school has closed due to the weather. Completely ridiculous. Anyway, as for the game, it was much more of a blowout than I would have expected. Huskies jumped out to a 13-0 lead before going up 23-2. And with that, the game was pretty much over. Duke was somewhat competitive for the rest of the game, but the deficit was too much.

On a side note, I almost caught a flying T-Shirt but it went right through my hands and down to the row below. And it was a pretty lobby toss so I should have had it. I'll never be a kick returner in the NFL. Oh well. It was a great game.

There is a semi-serious discussion going on at the UConn Fan Board about the Student Section chanting "Overrated" at Duke with us up by nearly 30 with 6 minutes to go in the first half. Some members describe it as "unsportsmanlike" and "offensive". This is ridiculous. The student section chants things that are a lot worse over the course of the game. While I'll grant that "overrated" is probably the most overused chant in college hoops, I really wouldn't consider it unsportsmanlike. Dumb, pointless perhaps, but not offensive or anything.

The next game I'll be at is the Men's Basketball game vs. Syracuse tomorrow night, but if it snows again (which it will) I don't know if the Roadshow will be on. Of course, the Orange may not be able to make it down here, in which case we'll see. The Connecticut Whale play Friday night at XL Center, so we'll see if they want a basketball game there Thursday night (if it's postponed). If not, I don't know what will happen. Play it at Gampel, perhaps? Too early to speculate.
